Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- A new storm system for the central U.S. during the end of the week, and generally favorable conditions in South America, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

STORMY MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a strong storm system to cross the Midwest during the end of the week and through the weekend. This storm will bring moderate-to-heavy rain to the western, central and southern sectors of the region, along with moderate-to-heavy snow in northern portions of the region. Transportation disruption is likely, along with safety hazards. Any late-harvest efforts will also be hindered.

SOUTHERN PLAINS SHOWERS

In the Southern Plains, light to moderate rain is in store for Kansas during Friday and Saturday. The rain adds to soil moisture supply, but may be stressful for livestock, transportation and late harvest. Oklahoma and Texas will be dry.

NORTHERN PLAINS SNOWSTORM

A snowstorm is indicated for the Northern Plains over the coming weekend. Moderate-to-heavy snow is expected, especially on Saturday. Blizzard conditions are possible, as the snow will be accompanied by strong winds. Temperatures will turn lower as well. This combination will be stressful to livestock and transportation.

CONTINUED BRAZIL RAIN

Across Brazil, continued scattered thunderstorms and variable temperatures will maintain favorable conditions for developing crops.

DRIER AND COOLER IN ARGENTINA

The central Argentina forecast continues to show a more favorable period for planting due to light showers over the next five days. Cooler conditions are indicated early next week, with some chance of frost in southern Buenos Aires.

NORTHERN EUROPE DROUGHT

Northeastern Europe, notably Germany and Poland, remains in need of precipitation following drought conditions during the 2018 growing season. Wheat and rapeseed establishment has been unfavorable; worst-afflicted

drought areas will likely have to replant in the spring.

FAVORABLE BLACK SEA MOISTURE

Russia and Ukraine wheat areas have favorable soil moisture for overwintering of the crop. Some areas have gone into dormancy.

LIGHT AUSTRALIA SHOWERS

Australia’s eastern wheat areas will have mostly light showers over the next week, causing some brief late-stage wheat harvest interruptions.

SHORT-TERM SOUTH AFRICA BENEFIT

South Africa crop areas have some short-term soil moisture improvement. Recent showers will favor emerging maize and developing sugarcane.
