OMAHA (DTN) -- More rain ahead in the northern Midwest to slow down harvest, and a limited rain prospect in central Brazil, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

VARIABLE MIDWEST HARVEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for slow Midwest harvest progress due to rain earlier this week. The pattern is more variable over the next week, with more precipitation in western and northern areas likely to continue to impede progress.

FAVORABLE SOUTHERN PLAINS MOISTURE

In the Southern Plains, soil moisture is in good supply for winter wheat development.

COLD AND DRY IN NORTHERN PLAINS

Northern Plains harvest progress has an improved forecast due to drier and colder conditions. A hard freeze is possible by this coming Saturday.

WET IN DELTA

Wet conditions in the Delta will disrupt harvest and winter wheat planting. Rain is also unfavorable for open-boll cotton.

PRAIRIES FREEZE

In the Canadian Prairies, freezing-level temperatures will help to firm the ground and improve conditions for harvest.

LIMITED CENTRAL BRAZIL RAIN

In central Brazil, Mato Grosso will have high temperatures with scattered afternoon showers during the next five days. Highs will reach the 95 to 102 Fahrenheit range (35 to 39 Celsius). Afternoon showers are most likely through the northwest portion of Mato Grosso. Hot weather will limit the benefit from rainfall. Longer-range outlooks suggest drier and hotter weather may redevelop over the region during the 10-day period. Rain and cooler weather will be needed to support recently-planted and soon-to-be- planted soybeans.

LIGHT RUSSIA SHOWERS

Scattered light showers and variable temperatures are forecast for primary wheat areas of Russia and Ukraine during the next five days.

DRY IN EASTERN AUSTRALIA

There is no significant rainfall in the forecast for drought-hit wheat areas of eastern Australia.
