DTN Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Variable conditions for Midwest harvest and possible freeze damage to Western Australia wheat are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

VARIABLE MIDWEST HARVEST CONDITIONS

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for variable Midwest harvest conditions this week. The western Midwest will see showers and thunderstorms return to the northwest and north-central areas early this week, leading to likely harvest delays. Eastern Midwest areas will see some delay in Ohio due to post-Hurricane-Florence-related rain. Other sectors of the eastern Midwest have favorable conditions during the first half of the week.

SOUTHERN PLAINS SHOWER CHANCE

In the Southern Plains, a dry and very warm pattern early this week will be favorable for winter wheat planting. A promising forecast for showers is indicated for later this week, which will be favorable for soil moisture.

SCATTERED NORTHERN PLAINS SHOWERS

The Northern Plains will have periods of showers during this week, leading to some disruption in harvest.

DRY IN DELTA

Delta crop areas will be mainly dry and hot through the week, with favorable harvest conditions.

COLD IN PRAIRIES

The Canadian Prairies have a cold forecast with periods of rain and snow this week. Rain and snow will improve moisture for winter grains, but will disrupt summer-crop harvest along with winter-grain seeding. Frost or freeze temperatures will bring an end to the growing season in many areas.

RAIN FOR CENTRAL BRAZIL

In central Brazil, light-to-moderate rain is forecast through the next week, improving soil moisture and allowing for soybean planting to occur on schedule. Southern Brazil has favorable moisture for continued planting progress.

LIGHT RUSSIA SHOWERS

Light-to-locally-moderate rain occurred in southern Russia and eastern Ukraine through the weekend. Showers offer some winter wheat planting soil moisture. The pattern turns drier this week.

SHOWERS FOR NORTHEASTERN CHINA

Northeastern China continues with a cool and cloudy pattern forecast, with periods of showers. This will be unfavorable for crop ripening and harvest.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA FREEZE

Grain areas of Western Australia experienced hard freeze temperatures over the past weekend. Temperatures in the range of minus-4 Celsius (28 Fahrenheit) were noted. Barley and canola sustained notable damage. Wheat may have also suffered damage. Western Australia wheat up to this point had the best potential for production this year.
