Mild Midwest Conditions

OMAHA (DTN) -- Mostly mild conditions in the Midwest, and mostly dry in Europe crop areas, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

MOSTLY FAVORABLE IN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast for the Midwest again calls for generally favorable conditions for filling corn and soybeans with adequate soil moisture and no persistent heat; however, northeastern and southwestern areas are still very dry with yield losses expected.

MORE SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN

Across the Southern Plains, showers and lower temperatures will favor filling summer crops at this time, especially through northern and central areas. Showers help replenish soil moisture for the upcoming planting season for winter wheat. A return to hotter, drier weather is possible during the six- to 10-day period.

NORTHERN PLAINS STAY DRY

In the Northern Plains, above to much above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall will deplete soil moisture and increase stress to filling corn and soybeans while favoring the spring wheat harvest.

SCATTERED WEST TEXAS SHOWERS

Periodic showers are forecast for the Texas Panhandle area during the next five to seven days. They are expected to be mostly light showers but with some heavier. The key growing areas south of the Panhandle will continue mostly dry or with only a few light showers during the next seven days. The best chance for a few showers appears to be Sunday or Sunday night. Temperatures will be upper to low 90s Fahrenheit through Sunday, near 90F Monday and Tuesday.

LIMITED PRAIRIES RAIN

In the Canadian Prairies, limited rainfall and episodes of hot weather stress filling wheat and canola in the region. Crop development is reported to be ahead of normal with some crops maturing and early harvesting started.

Yield reductions are expected due to summertime heat and dryness.

MAINLY DRY IN EUROPE

Europe crop areas will have variable temperatures during the next seven days with some periods of hot weather. There will be a few showers at times, but mostly light amounts, generally below normal for the season. Dryness and summer heat has affected wheat and corn crops. Sugar beet is also at risk from the dry weather pattern.

CONTINUED EASTERN AUSTRALIA DROUGHT

Across Australia, drought and above normal temperatures have likely affected wheat in southern Queensland, north and central New South Wales. Irrigation for cotton and sorghum crops, planted beginning next month, is reported to be low or very low at this time. The region is not likely to see significant showers during the next 10 days. Conditions are more favorable in wheat areas of West, South and Victoria at this time.

FAVORABLE NORTHEAST CHINA CONDITIONS

Northeast China has had recent rain, which improves crop prospects. Moisture is notably favorable for soybeans and corn in Heilongjiang province.

CENTRAL CHINA STORMS

Central China crop areas will see more rain through the next few days due to a tropical storm moving through the region.

IMPROVED WESTERN INDIA RAIN PROSPECT

Across India, moderate to heavy monsoon showers and thunderstorms have returned to the key growing areas for soybeans in west Madhya Pradesh. This activity will likely also bring generous rains to soybean, cotton and sugarcane areas of Maharashtra during the next few days. Key growing areas for cotton and groundnuts in Gujarat remain drier and hotter Thursday. However, it appears that significant thunderstorm activity will reach into these areas as well at the end of this week and this weekend. This is a change from earlier-week forecasts, due to a further south track of the disturbance moving in from the east.
