DTN Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- An easing of heat in the Midwest, and more indications of dryness impact on Europe and Russia crops, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

FAVORABLE MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for cooler weather and adequate soil moisture to favor Midwest row crops during the next five days. The drier trend will also allow flood water to recede in the northwestern Midwest. A weak trough and surface cold front later in the 10-day period should arrive soon enough to limit the warmer trend that may occur early in the six- to 10-day period.

SCATTERED SOUTHERN PLAINS STORMS

In the Southern Plains, thunderstorms in southwestern Nebraska and northwestern Kansas may be unfavorable for the winter wheat harvest while providing mostly favorable soil moisture for summer crops. A drying trend over Kansas and Oklahoma favors the final harvest effort for wheat while increasing stress to summer crops. Extreme heat levels will ease some for several days as a cool front dips down from the north.

ISOLATED WEST TEXAS SHOWERS

West Texas has a few isolated afternoon showers in store over the next week. However, rainfall remains below normal. The weather will be milder, with generally in the low 90s Fahrenheit.

NORTHERN PLAINS HEAT

The Northern Plains will be drier during the next week to 10 days. The weather will turn very warm to hot at times. General crop conditions are favorable. However, the drier and hotter pattern may increase stress, especially in the western half of the region.

FAVORABLE PRAIRIES PATTERN

In the Canadian Prairies, variable temperatures and episodes of showers and rain will mostly favor developing crops at this time.

DAMAGING EUROPE DRYNESS

Northern and central Europe crops are notably reduced from a year ago because of prolonged dryness and heat during the spring into summer. Germany is now estimating winter wheat production to be 20% below 2017 because of losses sustained due to very warm and dry conditions.

STILL HOT IN SOUTH RUSSIA

In the Black Sea region, the dry pattern with episodes of hot weather will continue in south Russia and the Volga valley during the next 10 days. Losses in corn and sunflower production appear likely. Eastern Ukraine will also be mainly dry. Crop prospects in this area also continue to decline. Rains have recently improved conditions for crops in central and western Ukraine.

DRY NORTHEAST CHINA PATTERN

Across northeast China, scattered thundershowers developed in the north during the past 24 hours while southern areas were drier and hotter. The region will see episodes of scattered to widely scattered showers and somewhat hotter temperatures during the next five days.

VARIABLE NORTH CHINA PLAIN RAINFALL

The North China Plain saw thunderstorms with heavy rains through southern areas during the past 24 to 48 hours, with other areas drier. North and central areas continue somewhat drier and hotter during the next five days. Showers may increase somewhat in the six- to 10-day timeframe.
