Heat Ridge Prospects

OMAHA (DTN) -- Possible formation of hot upper-level high pressure during the 10-day time frame, and a hot and dry pattern across South Russia, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

HEAT PROSPECT IN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for mostly favorable conditions for developing Midwest crops during the next five to seven days. A brief hot spell followed by thunderstorms will mostly be favorable, except during periods of afternoon heat. After that, the formation of hot upper-air high-pressure ridging over the central U.S. will bear close monitoring due to the prospect of hot and dry conditions developing through early July. This is a key topic, as corn moves into the pollination phase.

STRESSFUL HEAT FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

A return of hot and dry conditions in the Southern Plains during the next week to 10 days will favor wheat harvest. However, corn and soybeans, especially pollinating corn, will undergo increased soil moisture loss and crop stress.

MORE WEST TEXAS HEAT

West Texas cotton areas will continue with hot and dry conditions through the next 10 days. Excessive heat is likely.

SHORT-TERM NORTHERN PLAINS STORMS

Mostly favorable conditions remain in the Northern Plains. However, heavy storms with large hail may cause local damage during the next two days.

MORE PRAIRIES SHOWERS

Across the Canadian Prairies, variable temperatures and episodes of showers will favor developing crops. Rainfall appears to favor south and east locations during the five-day period, but may expand a little farther north after that.

HOT AND DRY IN SOUTH RUSSIA

In the Black Sea region, a hot and dry pattern continues to stress crops in south and east Ukraine and South Russia. The center of the concern appears to be South Russia with frequent hot days and little rainfall, even when cold fronts move through the area.

NORTHEAST CHINA SHOWERS

Northeast China continues with a variable temperature pattern and scattered showers. This pattern is favorable to developing crops.

DRIER IN NORTH CHINA PLAIN

Drier and hotter conditions are indicated for the North China Plain, at least through Sunday. The next chance for scattered thunderstorms in the area looks to be Monday or Tuesday. Thursday forecast guidance suggests that this chance would only be for the southern portion of the North China Plain. The drier and hotter pattern may continue over north and central areas of the region during the next week to 10 days.

IMPROVED INDIA MONSOON RAINS

Widespread monsoon rains have occurred through central interior India locations during the past couple of days, with more expected during the next few days. Rain also looks to expand northward into the Ganges Plain. Improved rains will allow for more widespread planting of Kharif (summer) crops. A possible exception to this is over Gujarat, where significant rainfall is somewhat less certain.
