Favorable Midwest Conditions

OMAHA (DTN) -- Mostly favorable Midwest crop conditions, and an improving rainfall forecast in the Canadian Prairies, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

GENERALLY FAVORABLE MIDWEST PATTERN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for, in general, a favorable pattern for developing Midwest crops. Early season corn ratings, at 79%, are tied for the highest initial ratings since the weekly progress and condition reports began. Remnants from former subtropical storm Alberto may bring some local flooding to the eastern Midwest. Dryness is now confined to portions of the far western Midwest. Planting progress for row crops has by and large attained either average or ahead-of-average rates.

VARIABLE SOUTHERN PLAINS TREND

In the Southern Plains, high heat and dryness continue to stress filling wheat and early row crop development. Scattered thunderstorms will, at times, offset the impact from hot weather in southern Kansas. Scattered thunderstorms mostly favor development of corn, soybeans and winter wheat in northern Kansas and southern Nebraska. Some improvement is also possible in central Kansas.

BENEFICIAL NORTHERN PLAINS PATTERN

The Northern Plains region continues to have generally favorable conditions for planting and developing spring wheat, corn and soybeans. Episodes of showers help to ease dryness concerns.

DELTA STAYS DRY

Most Delta crop areas are being bypassed by rain from post-tropical storm Alberto. Dryness is of some concern in the region. These concerns may increase if a hot upper-air high pressure ridge now located to the west does try to move east for a time during the next week to 10 days.

SHOWERS BENEFIT PRAIRIES

The Canadian Prairies region has mainly favorable conditions for planting across the region at this time. Recent showers have helped improve top soil enough for germination and early development. Forecasted showers in east Saskatchewan and Manitoba will continue to replenish top soil moisture further.

Central and west areas could use more rain and will probably only see light scattered showers during the five- to seven-day period, although with cooler weather.

SCATTERED NORTHEAST CHINA SHOWERS

Showers linger Tuesday in the southern portion of China's major row crop region. The next chance for more general rainfall looks to be this coming weekend.

DRY WEEK FOR AUSTRALIA

Australia wheat areas continue with a dry forecast through the remainder of the week. Dry conditions are unfavorable for early growth of the wheat crop.
