Our Rural Roots

Always a Farm Kid

Hey there, my name is Tiffany, and for most of my life, the title "farm kid" was one of which I was most proud. Now, that's been surpassed by "mom of farm kids." My husband and I are busy raising our little ones in the Texas Panhandle. I have a 3-year-old boy who knows every single farm implement (and is happy to correct you if you are wrong) and a 2-year-old daughter who is the biggest animal lover on earth.

I grew up on my family's farm and ranch in northeastern New Mexico, where we raise commercial cattle, show lambs and have some irrigated cropland. After being involved in 4-H and FFA throughout high school, I attended junior college on a livestock-judging scholarship and finished out an agribusiness farm and ranch management degree at Oklahoma State University. From there, I went on to obtain my law degree at the University of New Mexico.

I currently have my dream job with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, where I spend my days as an ag law specialist, educating landowners and ag producers about legal issues affecting their operations. My husband, Ty, works for an oil and gas company by day and is a family farmer and rancher by night.

I've been writing about rural America and my love for the family farm for several years. You can find more about me by visiting my blog, Little House Big Life, (www.littlehousebiglifetx.wordpress.com), and on Twitter (@TiffDowell). If you're interested in agricultural law, check out my Texas Ag Law Blog (www.agrilife.org/texasaglaw) or my Ag Law in the Field podcast.

I'm excited for the chance to continue writing on these topics for Progressive Farmer and look forward to sharing some of my adventures with you. One of my favorite things about being involved in production agriculture is that despite the geographical differences, farm kids are farm kids ... and we're the best people if you ask me.
