Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Possible freeze damage to Southern Plains wheat and a cold trend in the Midwest are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

COOL TO COLD IN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for Midwest fieldwork to be delayed over the next week following a stormy weekend with heavy snow in northern areas and moderate rain elsewhere. A cool to cold pattern this week will curtail fieldwork. In addition, periods of showers may still move through the region this week, including bouts of snow. Moderate rain will be possible over the southern Midwest Friday-Saturday.

FREEZE IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, very cold conditions may have damaged jointing wheat. Winter wheat in central Kansas is well into the jointing phase. Temperatures in the range of 19 to 24 Fahrenheit overnight Sunday into Monday may have caused damage.

VERY COLD IN NORTHERN PLAINS

Northern Plains will be bitter cold this week, stressing livestock and putting a hold on fieldwork. Low temperatures during the middle of this week may dip into the single digits above zero F.

RAIN RETURNS TO DELTA

The Delta had damaging weekend storms with tornadoes and strong winds, along with moderate-to-heavy rain. The rain has put a halt to fieldwork and planting. Generally drier conditions during this week may allow for some late-week activity.

VARIABLE BRAZIL RAINFALL

In Brazil's crop areas, rainfall continues in the forecast for central and northern areas. Crop estimates continue being pared back. A round of moderate showers moves through early this week to both southern and central regions, but then turns drier again. Northern areas continue to see periods of showers which favor the developing corn and cotton in these areas.

LIGHT ARGENTINA SHOWERS

Central Argentina has light showers forecast during the coming week. The showers will bring some improvement to soil moisture following a very dry spell in the past several weeks.

SCATTERED BLACK SEA PRECIPITATION

In the Black Sea region, light-to-locally moderate rain is forecast during the coming week. The rain offers some modest benefit for Russia and Ukraine soil moisture. Freeze-level temperatures during the past weekend may have caused some damage to winter wheat in areas where the coldest conditions occurred.
