May 2025 brought no good news in new machinery sales, according to the latest preliminary monthly sales report from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).

Sales of all tractors, from small units to large four-wheel drive tractors were down 11.9% in May compared to May 2024, according to AEM.

Sales of tractors 40 hp and below, were down 10.9%. Sales of tractors 40-100 hp were down 6.4% from May a year ago.

Among larger tractors, AEM reports May sales declined 30.1% for 100 hp+ tractors and 39.3% for four-wheel drive tractors. All told, manufacturers reported tractor sales of 21,192 units in May, compared to 24,056 units in May 2024.

Four-wheel drive tractors accounted for the largest percentage decline, but in actual numbers the sales of four-wheel drive tractors in May totaled 176, compared to 290, same month last year.

Sales of tractors year-to-date are down 12.8%; down 25.6% for tractors 100 hp+ and down 37.8% for four-wheel drive units.

Combine sales are similarly in the doldrums, AEM's analysis shows. AEM's preliminary report for May finds 317 combines sold last month, compared to 401 combines sold in May 2024. That's a nearly 21% decline, year-over-year.

For all of 2025, through May, combine sales are off 43.3% compared to the first five months of 2024. Total combine units sold in 2025 through May are 1,253. Compare that to 2,210 units sold January through May 2024.
