OMAHA (DTN) -- Variable rain in the Brazil forecast and additional precipitation in store for central Argentina are the primary weather features for the commodity market's attention Tuesday.

MIDWEST RAIN, SNOW

The DTN Ag Weather forecast calls for more moderate to heavy snow in the Midwest Tuesday, mostly in a swath from Iowa to the Great Lakes. Snow, cold air and strong winds will be hazardous for transportation and will be stressful to livestock. The snow also offers some soil moisture benefit. Beneficial moisture already was noted Monday in record snowfall across eastern Nebraska through central Iowa. A new storm system from the southwestern U.S. crosses the Midwest Wednesday and Thursday with light snow for the southern and eastern sectors.

SOUTHERN PLAINS SNOW BENEFIT

Across the Southern Plains, winter wheat conditions are highly variable. Latest reports indicate Kansas wheat at 43% good to excellent, 3 percentage points below the total in early January. Meanwhile, the Oklahoma winter wheat crop rates 61% good to excellent. Moderate to heavy snow was noted in northern portions of the region Monday. A weaker system will move through later Tuesday into early Wednesday with another occurrence of light snow in northern areas. Temperatures will warm significantly thereafter, melting some snow and adding soil moisture to the profile.

COLD, DRY IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, light snow and cold conditions remain as major points in the 7-day forecast. However, the pattern is still not extremely cold for this point in the winter season.

MIXED BRAZIL FORECAST

Brazil has a variable pattern in the 7-day precipitation forecast Northern and northeastern crop areas have only light rainfall in store; some dryness concerns are likely. Southern areas have a forecast for heavy to very heavy rain. Some flooding may occur in Rio Grande do Sul and Parana, along with disruption to early corn harvest.

ADDITIONAL ARGENTINA SHOWERS

Argentina has moderate to locally heavy rain in store for northern and central crop areas during the next seven days. The continued rainfall prospect offers the potential for an increase in production estimates for corn and soybeans as the season moves into its latter stages.
