DTN Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Continuing mostly beneficial weather in the Midwest with a risk of severe weather in some areas, a mainly dry pattern in the Northern Plains, and some chances for rain for the central and Southern Plains are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

RISK OF SEVERE STORMS IN SOME MIDWEST AREAS

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for mostly favorable weather for filling and maturing corn and soybeans except in areas of heavy rain and local severe weather and possible local flooding. Some areas might benefit from drier conditions at this time. There is a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms stretching from southern Minnesota southward into eastern Kansas and western Missouri during today and overnight. There are flood concerns in Wisconsin because of heavy rains, and flash flood advisories in Missouri and Kansas from heavy rainfall expected with today's thunderstorms.

INCREASE IN SHOWERS FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains areas will have increase in showers and weather cooling a bit for north, central and southwest areas this weekend and next week. Summer crops will benefit from the change. Winter wheat areas could use the moisture from any showers as planting season nears.

WEEKEND SHOWERS FOR WEST TEXAS

West Texas cotton areas will have mainly dry weather continuing for a few more days. However, later this weekend and early next week showers will increase in the area and temperatures will moderate. This is in response to a more active monsoon flow that drifts into the area from the west at that time.

DRY PATTERN FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, more rain would benefit filling corn and soybeans as crop ratings deteriorate. Rainfall is expected to remain limited during the next 10 days.

DRY PATTERN FOR PRAIRIES

In the Canadian Prairies, rainfall potential remains below normal during the next five to seven days. Late-filling crops may be under some stress.

However, this weather pattern favors maturing crops and harvesting at this time.

HOT, DRY PATTERN IN UKRAINE, SOUTH RUSSIA

A late-season hot, dry pattern has set up over south and east Ukraine and south Russia. This pattern has been in and out of the area all season long. A period of rain during midsummer helped ease concerns for crops. Late-summer hot, dry weather may stress late-filling crops while favoring maturing crops and early harvests. Dry/hot weather at this time also deletes soil moisture for planting the next winter wheat crop.

WEEKEND SHOWERS IN AUSTRALIA

Recent rainfall has helped ease drought conditions in the east-central Australia. This is likely too late to significantly improve prospects for winter wheat. Rainfall improves soil moisture and builds irrigation for planting cotton and sorghum, however much more rain is needed. A fast-moving cold front may bring showers to southern areas Friday into Saturday. Longer range there appears to be another chance for showers later next week. The early call on this suggests that it would produce heavier rainfall, but this is uncertain.

FAVORABLE INDIA MONSOON RAIN

The monsoon remains active over north-central and northeast India at this time but has weakened elsewhere in the region. The Ganges plain will benefit from additional showers and thunderstorm activity during the next five days. The west-central crop belt will be on the edge of this activity.

Significant showers will likely continue to develop in key soybean areas, but it is uncertain whether these showers reach to cotton, sorghum, groundnut and sugarcane areas in Maharashtra or Gujarat.
