OMAHA (DTN) -- More rain and thunderstorms for the Midwest and eastern Plains, limited rains for the Northern Plains for the next 10 days and a cooler trend for now in the Southern Plains are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

MIDWEST RAINS, THUNDERSTORMS

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for rain and scattered thunderstorms during this week and early next week in the Midwest to maintain adequate to surplus soil moisture for crops. This is mostly favorable except in areas of local flooding, as was seen Wednesday in northern Illinois and in areas of the eastern Midwest that are already too wet.

LIMITED RAIN FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

Rainfall potential during the next 10 days is rather limited for the Northern Plains. Lower temperatures have recently helped ease stress to crops, but going forward, there is some potential for hot weather in the region, depending on the position and strength of the sub-tropical ridge.

COOLER FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Southern Plains has no significant concerns for mature wheat and the wheat harvest at this time, although showers may at times slow the harvest. A cooler period will favor developing corn and sorghum in the region during this week. Hot weather is expected next week.

MAINLY DRY FOR WEST TEXAS

West Texas will see mainly dry conditions or only a few light showers during the next seven to 10 days. Temperatures will be above to well above normal. Dryland fields could use more rain to support favorable development.

MAINLY FAVORABLE OUTLOOK FOR CANADA'S PRAIRIES

Episodes of scattered showers and a variable temperature pattern mostly favors developing crops in Canada's prairies at this time. We will watch the position and strength of the U.S. ridge, as it may lead at times to some hot weather in the region.

BELOW AVERAGE RAINS FOR NORTHEAST CHINA

More rain is needed in northeast China for favorable development of corn and soybeans, especially in the western crop areas. Rainfall looks average to below normal during the next 10 days. Temperatures may vary somewhat but trend towards above normal.

IMPROVED INDIAN MONSOON RAINS THIS WEEK

Monsoon rainfall continues to improve across central and northwest India at this time. Significant rainfall has or will occur through key growing areas for oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane and other crops. This will likely include beneficial rainfall in the soybean belt of west-central India.
