OMAHA (DTN) -- Cool Midwest conditions hindering crop development, and showers threatening Southern Plains wheat harvest quality, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

MOSTLY COOL FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for generally cool conditions across the Midwest over the next week. This trend will be unfavorable for row crop development. This continues a trend that began during the May 20-29 timeframe. Periods of rain are also in store, with a heavy swath indicated in the Ohio Valley. This moisture will continue producing wet soils. Much of the southern and eastern Midwest has already received from two to three times the average precipitation for the month of May.

MORE SOUTHERN PLAINS SHOWERS

In the Southern Plains, additional rounds of cool weather with periods of showers will be unfavorable for maturing winter wheat. Increasing disease issues along with deteriorating crop quality and lower protein are expected.

SEASONAL FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

Across the Northern Plains, temperatures will be seasonal during the coming days. This pattern has generally favorable conditions for developing spring wheat. Row crops would benefit from a warmer pattern, however. Developing dryness in the Dakotas bears watching.

CONTINUED DELTA RAIN

In the Delta and Southeast, moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms remain in the forecast through the end of the week. The rain in the Delta will maintain adequate to surplus soil moisture for developing crops while leading to some delay in final planting efforts and promoting local flooding. Southeast areas will generally have soil moisture improvement; however, some flash flooding is possible in case of heavy rainfall.

DRY PRAIRIES MIDWEEK

The Canadian Prairies will be dry during this midweek timeframe. The drier pattern will be useful for late harvest and planting in the western sectors. Eastern sectors need rain. However, any upcoming precipitation looks to focus over the western portion of the region later this week.

SHOWERS FOR EUROPE

Western Europe has increasing showers and lower temperatures in the 10-day forecast. This will be favorable for crops after a recent very warm to hot period.

MILD RUSSIA FORECAST

Russia and Ukraine continue with a forecast for variable temperatures with episodes of showers. This combination will generally favor winter and spring grains and oilseeds.

MONSOON HOVERS OVER SOUTH INDIA

The leading edge of the India monsoon has not moved much from Tuesday. The monsoon front is still in southern Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu through northwest Myanmar.
