OMAHA (DTN) -- Only limited rainfall for Brazil this weekend, a short break in the wet pattern for Argentina and a major winter storm in the U.S. are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

MAJOR STORM FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a major winter storm with moderate to heavy mixed precipitation and snow to affect the Midwest late in the week and lead to some transportation disruptions and delays. Meanwhile, northern areas will have an intense cold wave through the seven-day period. The six- to 10-day outlook sees temperatures below normal, and precipitation near to below normal in the northwest, and near to above normal in the south and east.

BITTER COLD FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

Harsh Arctic cold will cover the Northern Plains during the remainder of the week. This cold wave will hinder transportation and will be stressful for livestock.

GENERALLY FAVORABLE FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, there is generally favorable conditions for overwintering wheat with adequate soil moisture. There is no damaging cold weather indicated.

CONTINUED BRAZIL DRYNESS

Forecast rainfall later in the week could be disappointing. There's above-normal temperatures and limited rainfall across Parana and the Mato Grosso at this time due to upper-level ridging. This will increase stress on pod-filling soybeans. Additional crop losses are expected. There are indications again today that this ridging will only see limited weakening over the weekend with the result being limited rainfall in Parana and central Brazil. The ridge is expected to rebuild next week. Above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall is expected to continue across northeast Brazil (Bahia) leading to crop losses. Adequate rainfall and moderate temperatures in Rio Grande do Sul is expected to maintain favorable conditions for developing soybeans.

CONSISTENT ARGENTINA PATTERN

Drier weather would benefit developing corn and soybeans in central Argentina. The weather is expected to remain wet through Thursday followed by drier weather over the weekend through early next week. Wet weather returns mid to late next week.
