Farm Listings Valued at $739 Million
Monette Farms Properties for Sale: Tens of Thousands of Acres in Western States
OMAHA (DTN) -- Brokers in the U.S. and Canada on Monday began listing roughly 274,000 acres of land now owned and leased by Saskatchewan-based Monette Farms.
A sales and solicitation teaser for the sales listed the total estimated value at $1.05 billion CAN, or $739 million in U.S. dollars.
The sale includes two Montana farms totaling 44,211 deeded acres and 33,714 leased acres. Combined, the two farms are priced at $66.5 million in U.S. currency.
Across Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Monette Farms also has an estimated 177,000 acres listed for sale with Canadian brokers, which includes 117,000 acres in Saskatchewan, according to Canadian court documents. Due to farm-ownership laws in each province, the Saskatchewan and Manitoba farms are likely restricted to Canadian buyers.
The sale includes a 7,051-acre organic dryland farm in Colorado and a 3,141-acre irrigated farm in Arizona. Another 52,700 or so acres are for sale in Alberta and British Columbia.

A Canadian bankruptcy court approved a sales and investment process (SISP) earlier this month to begin listing the farm properties. Monette, one of the largest farm operations in North America, became insolvent in April when CA$829.5 million ($584 million) in debt became due out of a total of CA$919.5 million ($647.25 million) in secured debt for the farm, according to court documents.
DTN reached out to Monette Farms' general counsel for comments on the sale of the properties but did not receive a response.
According to court documents filed earlier this month, Monette's creditors would like to see final farmland bids approved in October and the court signing off on the sales by the end of November.
