Top 5 Things to Watch

OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of June 9. Watch for coverage of these and other topics through the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.dtnpf.com. Note that all report release times are Central Daylight Time (CDT) unless otherwise noted.

1. WASDE Wednesday: This month we have two big USDA report releases, starting with Wednesday's World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report. We'll watch to see how world grain stockpiles changed from May, with a particular attention on the numbers around Brazil's soybean exports. USDA releases the report at 11 a.m. Our "Flash" story with initial numbers is posted shortly after 11, with updates and analysis throughout the morning. 2. DTN Ag Summit Webinar: We'll have our second DTN Ag Summit Series webinar of the year this Friday, June 14, "Navigating the Cattle Market's Ups and Downs." The free webinar will hit a number of timely cattle-related topics. Cody Dvorak, ag insurance services manager with Rabo AgriFinace will discuss the new and coming changes to the Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) insurance, which helps insure against price declines. While LRP has been around for more than a decade, changes to the rules around selling policies has made it easier to access, while higher subsidy rates have made it more affordable. More changes are coming for 2025, and Dvorak has the insights on what makes sense for cattle producers. You'll also hear the lates cattle market outlook from DTN Livestock Analyst ShayLe Stewart. 3. Weather looks wetter: There was hope of a continued reprieve in wet weather for the coming week, but models are starting to show more chances of rain mid- to late-week with each fresh model run. This continues to eat away at soil moisture shortages in some areas, while cutting into available soil nitrogen and hurting replant and spraying operations in other areas. The next couple of USDA NASS weekly Crop Progress reports, which we carry shortly after 3 p.m. Mondays, will help provide details on how the 2024 crop is faring these conditions.

4. Wheat rolls in: Winter wheat harvest is beginning in many parts of the country. The first of the weekly Kansas wheat harvest reports hit our inboxes June 7. DTN subscribers can find those reports in our Ag News segments. Not a subscriber? Check here for a trial: https://www.dtn.com/….

5. Economic reports to watch: Monday, at 10 a.m. the latest Grain Inspections report hits, Then at 2 p.m., we'll see U.S. Ag Trade Data Update, followed by USDA NASS weekly Crop Progress report, including the initial soybean crop rating, at 3 p.m. While Tuesday is a rare "no reports" day, a busy Wednesday kicks off with Consumer price Index and Core CPI at 7:30 a.m.; at 10:30 a.m. we'll see the EIA Weekly Petroleum Status including Ethanol Production and Stocks. At 11 a.m. is USDA June WASDE report, then at 1 p.m. we'll hear the latest Fed interest rate decision, followed by Monthly Federal Budget and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's press conference. Thursday, the 7:30 a.m. reports include Grain Export Sales, Initial Jobless Claims, Producer Price Index (PPI) and the Core PPI. At 10:30, the Weekly Economic Index hits. Friday starts with 7:30 a.m. release of the Import Price Index, then Consumer Sentiment numbers at 9 a.m. At 2 p.m. is the Turkey Hatchery report, then the 2:30 p.m. release of the CFTC's Commitment of Traders report.
