For anyone 5 feet 8 inches or shorter, this first step step assist really is a dream, says Bill Daly, De Soto, Iowa. And, it's easy to build. Bend a 4-foot length of threaded rod to the shape shown below. Then secure it to the bottom step with four nuts and four washers -- two of the nuts and washers attached to the rod as it rises through the step from below, the remaining two nuts and washers to the top of the rod protruding through the steps.
