OMAHA (DTN) -- Record cold in the United States leading to stress and possible damage to the winter wheat crop and wet weather hindering Brazil's soy harvest are the primary weather features for the commodity market's attention Monday.

MIDWEST COLD WAVE

In the Midwest, a couple of systems produced light precipitation during the holiday weekend; a storm on Monday brought moderate to heavy precipitation to the southeastern half of the region. Temperatures nearing zero Fahrenheit also made it down to the winter wheat belt in southern Illinois and Indiana, where some damage may have occurred before the heavy snow came in. The DTN Ag Weather forecast calls for a system that may produce more moderate to heavy snowfall across the eastern portions of the region later this week. Afterward, temperatures will rise toward normal for the weekend into next week.

RECORD COLD IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the central and Southern Plains, moderate to heavy snow fell across a wide portion of the region during the holiday weekend along with record cold. Any exposed winter wheat has been at risk for damage. Another system will produce more showers Tuesday into Wednesday, mostly across the south. Afterward, temperatures will increase into the weekend. Dry spots in the southwest remain and did not receive as much precipitation as was forecast and remain in drought.

BITTER NORTHERN PLAINS COLD

Temperatures have bottomed out in the Northern Plains and are now on the rise for the remainder of the week into the weekend. Recent conditions have been stressful for livestock but will improve.

SHOWERS FOR CENTRAL BRAZIL

Scattered showers fell across the bulk of Brazil during the extended weekend. This has delayed the soybean harvest and safrinha corn planting but improved conditions for recently planted corn. Showers will continue over central and northern areas, creating further delays. However, southern areas will dry out with low chances for showers during the next 10 days. This will improve fieldwork, but the lack of showers could be a concern for newly planted corn.

LOW CHANCES FOR ARGENTINA SHOWERS

In Argentina, scattered showers popped up over the weekend, improving soil moisture for reproductive to filling corn and soybeans. The showers also occurred over Cordoba, which was at more risk of missing out. Shower chances will be low for the next week, though a front will produce showers over southern areas Thursday into Friday. Areas to the north that are more mature will have good conditions for harvest, but the dryness will cause some concern for less-developed crops.
