Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- A drier and warmer forecast for the Plains and Midwest and flood damage to corn in northeastern China are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

WARMER MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for moderate to heavy showers to continue in the western Midwest through late week. Filling crops will benefit somewhat. Temperatures will show notable warming after frost level conditions in northern areas during the last couple days.

SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN BENEFIT

Beneficial light to moderate rain, locally heavier, has occurred in the Southern Plains during this week. Rain is favorable for soil moisture ahead of winter wheat planting.

SEASON-ENDING COLD IN NORTHERN PLAINS

The well-below normal temperatures will slowly rise during the next few days, but frosts and freezes were noted through much of the region, ending the fill period on corn about two to three weeks early in some areas.

DRY FOR DELTA HARVEST

The Delta has very little rainfall expected this week. Drier conditions will favor harvest progress.

RAINY SOUTHEAST FORECAST

The Southeast has broader coverage of showers and thunderstorms indicated during the next week. The rain may cause some quality loss in open boll cotton. Grain harvest also faces some disruption due to the increase in storms.

MILDER PRAIRIES CONDITIONS

The Canadian Prairies will see moderating temperatures and drier conditions through the balance of the week, favorable for wheat harvest progress.

CHINA FLOODING

Three typhoons have moved through northeast China during the last two weeks, causing widespread flooding and wind damage to corn and soybeans. Rainfall of up to a foot (12 inches or 300 millimeters) has been measured. The region affected is the top corn-growing region in China.

DRY RUSSIA PATTERN

Russia and Ukraine wheat areas have a dry pattern in store for the next week. This is unfavorable for wheat planting.

STILL DRY IN CENTRAL BRAZIL

High producing central crop Brazil crop areas remain dry. Forecast models continue to suggest the wet season may be late this spring, delaying soybean planting.

LIGHT ARGENTINA RAINFALL

In central Argentina, showers the rest of the week will focus on the far north and the east, where soil moisture is still mostly favorable, leaving much of the interior dry and needing rainfall.

LIMITED AUSTRALIA SHOWERS

Australia rainfall prospects have a limited total through the weekend. Some scattered showers will drift north during the next several days through Queensland, which will benefit developing to reproductive wheat and rapeseed, but more would be welcome.
