Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Widespread Midwest showers this weekend followed by several days of dryness for much of next week and weekend rain prospects in Australia are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

MIDWEST MOSTLY DRY NEXT WEEK FOLLOWING WEEKEND SHOWERS

The DTN Ag Weather forecast calls for a front to bring widespread showers this weekend followed by several days of dryness for much of next week as showers are likely to skim across the north. Drier areas in Iowa, Indiana and Ohio may find renewed or continuing stress on filling crops.

SCATTERED SHOWERS ACROSS SOUTHERN PLAINS

Periods of isolated to scattered showers will continue over the weekend across the Southern Plains. After Sunday, showers will be more likely closer to the Rockies and across the north but continue through next week. Showers will benefit filling corn where they occur, but much of the region has above-normal soil moisture due to rains over the last month. West Texas continues to be hotter and drier for boll-setting cotton and could use more shower activity to reduce irrigation demand. Daily isolated showers will occur in a few locations, and the heat looks to subside Sunday or Monday.

ROTATING PERIODS OF SHOWERS, DRYNESS IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, scattered showers will continue Friday before a few days of dryness occur. More showers are expected in the middle and end of next week. The rotating periods of dryness and showers should benefit both the harvest of wheat, and filling of corn.

DRIER CONDITIONS RETURN TO DELTA, SOUTHEAST NEXT WEEK

Showers in the Delta region will be isolated through this weekend before drier conditions return to the region. Areas that remain behind in soil moisture will likely show more stress. Some dryness continues across Georgia where the showers have been more isolated recently, but scattered showers will continue over the next week, benefiting those areas they hit. Being scattered, some areas of dryness will continue or build in areas that are missed. Despite this, conditions are mostly favorable for boll-setting cotton.

PRAIRIES DRIER OVER WEEKEND INTO NEXT WEEK

In the Canadian Prairies, showers will still be beneficial over the next week or so before becoming a hindrance on maturing wheat. Heavier showers moved through eastern Saskatchewan and Manitoba over the last couple of days. This was a benefit to later planted crops but somewhat of a hindrance to maturing wheat as the harvest has begun. Drier conditions settling in for the weekend into next week should benefit the ramp-up of harvest activities, though stress may increase to those drier areas in the southwest before shower chances return in the middle of next week.

VARIABLE RUSSIA RAIN

In the Black Sea region, soils continue to be drier for much of the eastern two thirds of the area, though an upper level system moving through will continue to bring scattered showers to the region through the weekend. The showers are not likely to be widespread or heavy enough to significantly affect filling crops, but will be a benefit in the Volga region, where showers have been more consistent over the last week or so. Drier conditions will follow for Ukraine and the southern district in Russia, where stress in filling crops will be more likely.

SOUTHERN AUSTRALIA SYSTEM TO SPREAD FARTHER NORTH

A system brought much-needed rain for developing wheat and rapeseed in eastern areas late last week, but eastern growing areas, especially Queensland, could use more moisture. A system in southern Australia will spread showers farther north for Friday and Saturday and may be a benefit.
