Commodities Market Impact Weather
Rain and Chills in Midwest
OMAHA (DTN) -- Cool to cold and rain in the Midwest and beneficial rainfall in the Southern Plains are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.
RAINY AND COLD IN MIDWEST
The DTN ag weather forecast calls for unfavorable growing conditions in the Midwest during the balance of the week. Temperatures may fall below freezing across the north and east through Wednesday morning. This continues several mornings of subfreezing temperatures since last week and causes concern for recently emerging crops and developing wheat. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected through this weekend and could cause flooding concerns. Areas with lighter precipitation will have limited benefit due to cloud cover and low growing degree day totals.
FAVORABLE SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN
In the Southern Plains, moderate to locally heavy rain in western areas Monday was beneficial to winter wheat. Additional showers are expected during the balance of the week, mostly in central and eastern areas. Morning lows near freezing in northwestern Kansas and western Nebraska should mark the end of subfreezing temperatures for the growing season. The pattern turns much warmer and drier during the six- to 10-day period.
CHILLY AND WET IN NORTHERN PLAINS
In the Northern Plains, subfreezing temperatures Tuesday likely will be the last such occurrence of the season. However, below-normal temperatures continue for the majority of the 10-day period. Moderate rain and some snow will cross the region through Wednesday. Additional rainfall is expected through the end of the week. This pattern will delay fieldwork and planting. Some acreage loss due to prevented planting is likely.

SCATTERED DELTA RAIN
The Delta has scattered rainfall through the balance of the week. This combination is mostly favorable for crop development.
MORE BLACK SEA SHOWERS
Wheat areas in the Black Sea region of Russia and Ukraine saw beneficial rain during the past week. Periods of showers continue to be featured in the forecast during the balance of this week as well.
VARIABLE EUROPE RAINFALL
Across Europe, rain and cool temperatures in northern areas will keep crop development slow during this week. Elsewhere, southeast areas are turning drier.
LIMITED BRAZIL RAIN
The next week offers limited rain across most crop areas in Brazil. Soil moisture is very short in southern, south-central and eastern areas. A front will slowly creep northward through the country this week. Showers look to be heaviest over the south through Wednesday with diminishing showers northward. Rain is much needed and will be closely monitored.
ADDITIONAL ARGENTINA DRYNESS
Argentina crop areas will be dry through the next seven days. The drier trend benefits corn and soybean harvest; however, recent dryness has been unfavorable for river transport of commodities.
FAVORABLE AUSTRALIA MOISTURE
Australia wheat areas have favorable moisture for seeding and early crop development after a more active rainfall pattern.
