Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Winter storm prospects for the north-central United States, and variable rains in Brazil soybean areas, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

MIDWEST FREEZE THREAT

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a powerful north-central U.S. storm system to bring a season-ending freeze in the western Midwest during mid to late week, which will damage immature crops. Frost and a light freeze may also occur eastward to the Mississippi River. Moderate to locally heavy rain and some snow are also in store for the northwestern sector.

WINTER STORM FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

Northern Plains' crop areas have a strong winter storm ahead for mid to late week. Heavy snow, high winds, and low temperatures are indicated during Thursday and Friday. This will end the crop season in almost all sectors, along with affecting travel, transport and harvest progress. Crop lodging is also likely due to heavy snow and strong winds. The storm this week is also likely to stress livestock in the northern Rockies, Northern Plains and in the Canadian Prairies.

COLDER FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, a late-week storm system is forecast to bring cold weather along with periods of showers and thunderstorms. Northwest areas will also have a chance for snow. This storm and precipitation will slow the rate of germination and early development of wheat. Row crop harvest will also be disrupted.

STORM AND COLD FOR PRAIRIES

A powerful winter storm is slated to affect the Canadian Prairies during late week. Heavy snow, heavy rain and very strong winds are indicated for the eastern sector of the region. Manitoba is in line for heavy snow. The entire region will then incur a hard freeze to end the growing season through the coming weekend. These elements will have a major impact on travel, transport and harvests this period, along with affecting livestock.

VARIABLE BRAZIL RAIN CHANCES

Across Brazil, more rain is needed to initiate widespread soybean planting. However, rainfall will be variable. Planting is likely to remain slow due to this minimal rainfall. Total Brazil soybean planting is off to the slowest start in six years.

WIDESPREAD EUROPE SHOWERS

In Europe, showers remain in the 10-day forecast, which will improve soil moisture for winter grain planting. Coverage includes recently dry areas of southeastern Europe.

WARMER IN UKRAINE

In the Black Sea region, Ukraine will have a warming trend during the next 10 days, favoring germination and establishment of winter grains. More rain would be welcome ahead of winter grain dormancy.

ISOLATED AUSTRALIA RAIN

Western Australia wheat areas had isolated rain during the past weekend. Other wheat areas were dry. The forecast continues to offer limited rainfall. Wheat crop reduction continues due to drought.
