OMAHA (DTN) -- Periods of rain and cold to delay harvest in the western Midwest, and more chances for rain in Brazil soybean areas, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

COOL AND WET IN WESTERN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for slow harvest conditions to continue in the western and north-central Midwest. Additional rain is possible in these sectors during the next three days. There is also some chance for frost in northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan and a slight chance in eastern South Dakota through Friday. The six-to-10-day period offers at least some chance of more wet and colder conditions.

MORE NORTHERN PLAINS DELAYS

In the northern Plains, additional light-to-moderate rain and some snow occurred Wednesday. A frost and light freeze will affect late-developing corn and soybeans through central and east areas this week. Warmer, drier weather this weekend and early next week will be more favorable. A new cold outbreak is expected during the six-to-10-day period.

SOUTHERN PLAINS MOISTURE

In the Southern Plains, periods of thunderstorms are bringing rainfall to improve soil moisture for winter wheat planting. Locally heavy rainfall will bring some delays in planting.

UNFAVORABLE PRAIRIES PATTERN

In the Canadian Prairies, rain developed in eastern areas Wednesday night, hindering harvest and crop maturation. There are additional rains of moderate intensity in eastern areas likely during the coming weekend. The 10-day period will also bring a new round of much colder conditions to the entire region. Harvest delays and disruptions likely continue. Additional damage to late-maturing crops may also occur during the next 10 days.

CENTRAL BRAZIL RAIN CHANCES

In central Brazil, periods of rain are in store for central crop areas. Soybean planting conditions will improve.

ADDITIONAL EUROPE SHOWERS

In Europe, showers continue in the forecast, which will improve soil moisture for winter grain planting. Parts of southeastern Europe are drier.

BLACK SEA SHOWER CHANCE

Ukraine and western Russia are likely to see episodes of light to locally moderate showers and improving conditions during the next 10 days. These regions are dry, with a notable lack of soil moisture.

DRY AUSTRALIA FORECAST

Very little rain is indicated for Australia's wheat areas during the next five days. Dryness in South Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales will be compounded by very hot weather.
