Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Additional rain and harvest delays in the Midwest, and a mixed rain prospect in Brazil soybean areas, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

MORE MIDWEST RAIN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for heavy rain and flooding to continue bringing unfavorable conditions for maturing crops and harvesting over the west and north-central sectors. There is also a threat of scattered frost in these areas in the five-day period. A recent spell of very warm, dry weather in the south-central and east-central areas has been more favorable. A gradual shift to drier conditions is indicated in the 10-day period.

COOL AND WET IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, wet fields due to the weekend rain will mean harvest delays for spring grains in the region. Additional light-to-moderate rain today. A frost and light freeze will affect late-developing corn and soybeans through central and east areas this week. Warmer, drier weather this weekend and early next week will be more favorable. Cooler weather may return late in the 10-day period.

IMPROVED SOUTHERN PLAINS MOISTURE

In the Southern Plains, periods of thunderstorms are bringing rainfall to improve soil moisture for winter wheat planting. Locally heavy rain will bring some delays in planting.

SLOW PRAIRIES HARVEST

In the Canadian Prairies, western areas have had frost and freeze conditions, along with rain and snow earlier this week. Crops were likely damaged. Moderate rain is forecast for eastern areas during the end of the week, followed by a drier pattern. Temperatures will turn higher, which will melt snow cover; however, muddy fields will bring further harvest disruptions.

MIXED CENTRAL BRAZIL RAIN

In central Brazil, hot weather redeveloped in the area during the past couple of days. The pattern will be mainly dry and very warm to hot through Friday. The next chance for scattered thundershowers and cooler conditions comes this weekend. Planting delays are likely until more regular rains arrive and temperatures return to more normal levels.

ADDITIONAL EUROPE SHOWERS

In Europe, showers continue in the forecast, which will improve soil moisture for winter grain planting.

UKRAINE SHOWER CHANCE

Ukraine and western Russia are likely to see episodes of light to locally moderate showers and improving conditions during the next 10 days. These regions are dry, with a notable lack of soil moisture.

ONGOING AUSTRALIA DROUGHT

In Australia wheat areas, multi-year drought is reducing wheat crop prospects. Eastern Australia state of Queensland and New South Wales have had the worst of the drought; however, dryness has spread into South Australia and Victoria, and is now affecting Western Australia. Western Australia has scattered light rain indicated Thursday and Friday. Portions of New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria recently had rain showers, but are expected to turn very hot during the balance of this week.
