Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Heavy rain and flood threat in the Midwest, and rain and snow in the Canadian Prairies, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

HEAVY MIDWEST RAIN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for heavy rain and flooding to cover the western and northern Midwest during the next week. The rain will delay any early harvest efforts, and will cause damage potential for crops. Temperatures will remain above freeze levels, allowing continued maturation of crops. Meanwhile, southeastern Midwest areas will be dry and very warm, favoring harvest progress.

WINTER-TYPE NORTHERN PLAINS CONDITIONS

In the Northern Plains, heavy rain, snow, wind and cold will cover the western portion of the region through the weekend. Impact to travel, transportation, and livestock will be extreme. In central and eastern sectors, heavy rain and thunderstorms will delay and disrupt the harvest of spring wheat, corn and soybeans. Some colder conditions will also develop, possibly affecting immature row crops.

SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN

In the Southern Plains, expanding coverage of rain during the next week will generally benefit soil moisture for winter wheat planting. Rain will slow harvest of row crops. In addition, the rain will cause some damage to cotton.

FREEZE AND SNOW IN PRAIRIES

In the Canadian Prairies, heavy precipitation is in store for the southern and western sectors during the coming weekend. This includes heavy snow in southern Alberta and southern and central Saskatchewan. Crop and livestock impact will be extreme. Following rain and snow, a hard freeze, with low temperatures well under 28 Fahrenheit, will end the growing season in the western half of the region. The eastern half will also see possible season-ending cold. This likely means loss of production where crops are un-harvested.

CENTRAL BRAZIL SHOWERS

Brazil's central crop areas have seen a round of rain showers during the past two days, which, along with lower temperatures, have been beneficial for soybean planting. Additional rain is indicated in the next week.

EUROPE SHOWERS

In Europe, increasing rain will improve soil moisture conditions for planting and early growth of winter grains and oilseeds through west and central Europe.

SCATTERED BLACK SEA SHOWERS

In the Black Sea region, scattered light-to-moderate showers are forecast through the next 10 days.

DRY FOR AUSTRALIA WHEAT

All Australia wheat areas will be dry and very warm to hot during the next five days. Wheat prospects continue to decline.
