Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Additional rain indicated for the Midwest, and a very cool pattern for the entire central U.S., are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

MORE RAIN FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms to continue in the Midwest through the weekend. Rainfall will offer some crop moisture improvement. Below- to much-below-normal temperatures during the next week to 10 days will continue to delay development. Crop development remains well behind normal.

SLOW NORTHERN PLAINS PROGRESS

Northern Plains crop areas will have below- to much-below-normal temperatures along with periods of showers over the next five days. The rain will further slow the rate of spring wheat harvest, which is already well behind normal due to the effect of the cool and wet spring season. Row-crop progress will continue to lag in development as well. Crop progress is at least two weeks behind the normal pace. This late and delayed development leaves crops vulnerable to even an average date of the first freezing temperature occurrence.

COOL PRAIRIES PATTERN

Canadian Prairies crop areas will have cool to very cool conditions over the next week. This trend will slow development of crops and leave them vulnerable to even an average occurrence of the first fall freeze. Canola is especially at risk for frost-related damage. The next few days will also bring periods of rain, which will favor late-filling crops, but may be unfavorable for early-maturing crops and any very early harvesting, especially in eastern areas.

MIXED EUROPE MOISTURE

Across Europe, crop moisture supplies are variable. Western Europe is still in need of rain following very hot and dry conditions earlier this summer. Eastern and southeastern Europe crop moisture is generally adequate.

FAVORABLE BLACK SEA PATTERN

In the Black Sea region, Russia and Ukraine yield prospects for summer crops are good to excellent. Meanwhile, moisture supplies are favorable for upcoming winter wheat planting in September.

VARIABLE AUSTRALIA WHEAT OUTLOOK

Across Australia, Western Australia wheat crop prospects are favorable due to periodic rains over the past several months. Eastern Australia wheat is likely to be notably reduced because of drought.
