OMAHA (DTN) -- Mainly favorable conditions for South America, and moderate to heavy rains this week in southern and eastern areas of the Midwest, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

PRECIPITATION FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for moderate to heavy precipitation later this week into the weekend that will occur mainly as rain through southern and eastern areas of the Midwest. This will maintain adequate to surplus soil moisture in the soft red winter wheat belt and it may also mean some local flooding. There are no significant transportation concerns through the northwest belt this week.

MILD FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, there are no significant cold weather threats for the winter wheat belt during the next 10 days. Precipitation chances are limited to the eastern areas. Conditions are favorable in the southwest feedlots.

COLD, DRY TREND FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, no significant precipitation is expected during the next seven days. The region will see episodes of low temperatures, possibly very cold at times. Some stress to livestock during periods of very cold weather can be expected.

POSSIBLE SOUTHERN BRAZIL SHOWERS

In Brazil, there's a more favorable weather pattern for crops from Parana northward, including some heavy rains in previously dry areas of western Bahia. The Rio Grande do Sul area of southern Brazil continues to struggle to get any kind of significant rainfall, and until significant rain occurs, the temperatures are likely to be somewhat higher than expected. The next best chance for scattered thunderstorms in RGDS comes this Thursday, but it is not certain this would include more than just light to moderate showers.

BENEFICIAL WEEKEND RAINS IN ARGENTINA

Argentina's key growing areas of Buenos Aires and southern Cordoba likely will benefit from the significant rains that occurred this past weekend. There was still somewhat less rain, although not totally dry, in La Pampa.

No significant hot weather is expected this week. This is seen as improving conditions for crops.

STILL WARM IN BLACK SEA REGION

In the Black Sea region for Ukraine and west Russia, there are no significant cold weather threats during the next seven to 10 days, with mostly above- to sometimes near-normal temperatures.

PRECIPITATION FOR CHINA

Moderate to locally heavy precipitation has occurred in China's winter wheat and rapeseed areas during the weekend with more likely this week. This means adequate to surplus soil moisture and in some cases increasing snow cover. In either case, this is favorable for overwintering crops.

EUROPE CONTINUES DRIER

West and south Europe is likely to continue drier than normal during the next 10 days. This is a favorable trend after recent above-normal rains, although crop areas of southern Spain could use more rain. No significant cold weather is forecast during the period.

SHOWERS FOR SOUTH AFRICA

Scattered showers will continue to favor western and southern maize and southern sugarcane areas of South Africa this week. These are favorable conditions for developing crops. There's some chance for needed showers to occur in northeast areas later in the week. These areas have trended towards too dry conditions during recent weeks.
