OMAHA (DTN) -- Snow and cold weather shutting down fieldwork in the Northern Plains and northwest Midwest, mostly favorable conditions for Brazil, and dryness issues in Argentina, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

UNSETTLED WEATHER IN MIDWEST

The DTN Ag Weather forecast for the Midwest calls for unsettled weather this week, especially in the eastern and northwest Midwest, to disrupt the remaining harvest. Drier weather during the past six to seven days should have allowed some harvesting to occur, but during Sunday night and Monday snow or snow showers in the western Midwest and light to moderate precipitation in the eastern Midwest during the weekend and mainly last night have affected fieldwork again. The Midwest will see variable temperatures this week, although parts of the western Midwest will see temperatures below to much below normal early this week.

MUCH COLDER IN NORTHERN PLAINS

The Northern Plains has snow, wind and a turn to much colder weather yesterday and overnight last night. Extreme cold conditions will last a few days early this week, followed by moderating temperatures. There will be increased stress to livestock for a time, especially in areas with a fresh snow cover. Limited harvest progress or fieldwork will be done.

DRY TREND FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, no significant rain, outside of Texas, is expected during the next 10 days. Dryness is of increased concern through southwest and central growing areas. There are no significant cold weather threats for either winter wheat or livestock in feedlots of the southwest at this time.

CONTINUED RAIN FOR BRAZIL

Brazil crop areas have favorable conditions for developing soybeans throughout the major growing areas, although persistent rainfall in central Brazil may increase soybean rust issues. Above normal temperatures and limited rainfall continues to affect soybean planting and development in the minor northeast areas (Bahia).

EXPANDING DRYNESS IN ARGENTINA

Argentina has increasing concern over expanding dryness across Buenos Aires and La Pampa at this time. Hot weather early this week will increase stress to early planted crops. Hot, dry weather may slow planting progress in some areas. Cooler weather at the end of the week will help ease stress to crops. The next system that could bring rain to the area is early next week. The early call on this suggests this may bring significant rain to only the northern corn and soybean areas, again missing the Buenos Aires and La Pampa crop areas, but this may change. This system will be watched.

IMPROVING SOUTH AFRICA CONDITIONS

South Africa has improving conditions for planting and development of maize and sugarcane due to increasing rains and lower temperatures during this past week, including the weekend. There is some delay to planting due to the wet conditions.

AUSTRALIA DRYNESS CONCERN

Dryness remains of much concern in key summer crop growing areas at this time in Australia. Drought impact to sorghum, cotton and sugarcane can be expected, although sorghum and cotton are normally more drought resistant than other crops and cotton is mostly irrigated.
