OMAHA (DTN) -- Cool weather and some rain chances in the Corn Belt, dryness issues continuing in some areas of the Western Corn Belt and the Canadian Prairies, and some moisture for the Southern Plains wheat area, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

SOME RAIN CHANCES IN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for more favorable weather for filling corn and soybeans in the western Midwest due to near- to below-normal temperatures. However, drought stress continues in some areas, especially southern and western Iowa. There's mostly favorable weather for filling corn and soybeans in the eastern Midwest, although more rain would benefit in parts of Illinois. Early next week there are some good chances for rains in the Corn Belt, up to a quarter to an inch of rain with locally heavier amounts, although it still may be limited in Nebraska and southern and western Iowa.

RAIN FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains crop areas have generally favorable conditions for developing crops. Rainfall of moderate to locally heavier amounts is forecast for this week, which will offer additional benefit overall, especially for planting hard red winter wheat in September. For west Texas, there are generally favorable conditions for developing cotton.

COOLER, LIMITED RAIN IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, cooler weather will ease stress to later-filling corn and soybeans. However, rainfall remains limited as drought stress continues.

TROPICAL STORM FRANKLIN

As of Wednesday morning, Tropical Storm Franklin was located 240 miles east-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico. Franklin is moving toward the west near 13 miles per hour, and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 to 36 hours. On the forecast track, the center of Franklin is expected to approach the coast of eastern Mexico today, then cross the coast in the Mexican state of Veracruz tonight or early Thursday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is expected, and Franklin is forecast to become a hurricane later today and reach the coast of Mexico as a hurricane tonight or early Thursday. Rapid weakening is expected after landfall in Mexico.

LIMITED RAIN FOR PRAIRIES

Major losses to spring wheat are due to hot, dry weather in July for the Canadian Prairies. More favorable weather is expected for canola, which is mostly grown in northern areas. Rain chances into next week are limited for the Prairies.

AREAS OF DRYNESS IN UKRAINE AND RUSSIA

Generally favorable soil moisture for crops in Ukraine and Russia is noted, except more rain would benefit crops in southeast Ukraine and southwest portions of the southern district of Russia.

FAVORABLE NORTHEAST CHINA RAIN

Beneficial rain continues for reproductive to filling corn and soybeans in northeast China.

DRIER IN WEST INDIA TREND

Drier weather favors planting and developing oilseeds and cotton in the major growing areas of west-central India.

MORE RAIN NEEDED IN AUSTRALIA

Some beneficial rain for wheat in Australia has occurred; however, more is needed as rainfall totals remain well below normal since May 1.
