Western Corn Belt Stress
OMAHA (DTN) -- Heat and dryness stressing crops in the western Midwest and Northern Plains, and limited rainfall for the central Canadian Prairies, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.
DRIER IN WESTERN MIDWEST
The DTN ag weather forecast calls for continued wide variability in Midwest rainfall over the next week to 10 days. Western areas have light precipitation with very warm to hot weather, while eastern areas will see cooler conditions with higher rainfall chances. This offers a mixed prospect for pollinating corn, with potential stress and yield impact in western areas due to heat and dryness.
MOSTLY DRY IN SOUTHERN PLAINS
In the Southern Plains, there are no significant concerns for mature wheat and wheat harvest at this time. A trend towards below normal rainfall and above normal temperatures may increase the risk to summer crops in the area.

CONTINUED NORTHERN PLAINS DROUGHT
Northern Plains' rainfall chances during the next 10 days remain very scant. Drought conditions also will enhance the likelihood for very hot weather to develop. This pattern will greatly increase stress to crops, notably to spring wheat. Growers are making comparisons to the harsh drought of 1988.
CENTRAL PRAIRIES HEAT AND DRYNESS
Across the Canadian Prairies, dryness is still of much concern in an area centered on southwest and central Saskatchewan. Recent lower temperatures have helped ease concerns somewhat, but a round of higher temperatures appears to be in store over the next week to 10 days. Areas further north and east within the Prairies should not be as hot or as dry.
SLIGHT COOLING FOR UKRAINE
In Ukraine and south Russia, the weather was fairly hot Monday before moderating Tuesday. The region should be cooler during the next few days with showers possible at times. Mostly favorable growing conditions are in effect at the moment. In the longer range, temperatures show a warming trend but with some chance for showers.
HOT SPELL IN CHINA
Northeastern China has again become hot and should continue hot for another day or two. After that, showers increase in the region and the weather will trend cooler. Rain is needed to support favorable growth of corn and soybeans.
VARIABLE INDIA MONSOON RAIN
India monsoon rain remains active over north-central and eastern areas during the next three to five days. However, a drying trend is likely for key soybean, groundnut and cotton areas of west Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and possibly Maharashtra as well. Temperatures turn higher if rain stays away too long.
