Rain and Cold in Midwest

OMAHA (DTN) -- Moderate to heavy rain and low temperatures in the Midwest, and a cold pattern with periodic rain throughout the Plains winter and spring wheat areas, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

WET AND COOL IN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a cold and wet pattern across the Midwest through the middle of next week. This will lead to delays for planting corn and soybeans, especially in the west where it will be coldest. Central and east areas will see increasing delays during the period as heavier rainfall develops.

COLD WATCH IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

Cold weather through the next five days in the Southern Plains bear close attention for possible damage to heading wheat. Low temperatures for the season, along with periods of rain, will also cause delays to row crop planting. The longer-range forecast offers warmer and drier conditions.

HEAVY DELTA RAIN LIKELY

The Delta has had generally favorable planting conditions. However, fieldwork and planting delays for soybeans will likely be increasing as the trend turns very wet and stormy.

MORE NORTHERN PLAINS DELAYS

In the Northern Plains, wet conditions and cold weather will bring additional disruption to spring planting over North Dakota and northern Minnesota.

SLOW PRAIRIES PROGRESS

In the Canadian Prairies, low temperatures and above-normal spring precipitation will likely delay any thoughts of spring fieldwork over northern Alberta and northwest Saskatchewan. The region is expected to see only about 0.25 inch melted during the next seven days which should help improve conditions, somewhat. Elsewhere in the region, cold weather will limit fieldwork chances, but soils are drier due to mostly below normal seasonal precipitation.

DRIER BRAZIL PATTERN

In central Brazil, recent rainfall will favor development of second crop corn. Drier conditions are in store during the next week. This development may be an indicator of the end of the rainy season in Brazil and will bear close attention.

MILD ARGENTINA FORECAST

Argentina has a more favorable weather pattern for maturing summer crops and harvesting at this time. The region should be drier and much warmer at the end of this week and early next week.

WARMER RUSSIA PATTERN

A much warmer and mostly dry pattern is indicated through at least the next week in Russia and Ukraine. This should help improve conditions for winter wheat and early planted spring grains. It could also encourage additional spring planting in south and east Ukraine and South Russia, including corn planting.
