OMAHA (DTN) -- A dry weekend ahead in Argentina, and a developing variable rainfall pattern in Brazil, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

DRIER ARGENTINA FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a very warm to hot and mostly dry pattern in Argentina through the weekend into early next week. This pattern is stressful to crops, and leads to further ideas of notable reduced acreage for soybean planting due to dry soils.

LIGHTER CENTRAL BRAZIL RAIN

Brazil's rain pattern is turning more variable. Southern areas continue to receive periods of moderate to heavy precipitation, while central and northern areas are drier. The drier trend in northern areas is favorable for early harvest, but does bear watching for possible stress to later-developing crops.

NO PRECIPITATION FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains areas remain in the grip of a dry La Nina-enhanced pattern. Moisture chances are minimal in wheat areas over the next week. The entire southwestern sector of the region is now in either severe or extreme drought according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

BLIZZARD POTENTIAL IN NORTHERN PLAINS

Northern Plains and western Midwest areas have increasing potential for a storm system bringing snow, ice and rain along with strong winds during the Sunday-to-Monday timeframe. The storm system is likely to produce an area of heavy snow and strong winds affecting transport and increasing stress on livestock. The highest risk for snow and wind is in eastern South Dakota through southern and western Minnesota. Blizzard conditions are possible in this area Sunday night and Monday.

VARIABLE MIDWEST TEMPERATURES

Eastern Midwest areas have variable temperatures with mixed precipitation in store through the next week. There are no significant concerns for the soft red winter wheat crop at this time. However, widely varying temperatures might be somewhat unfavorable in some locations.

DRY WEEKEND IN SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa's corn areas should be dry or with only a few thundershowers in southern areas through the weekend, with above-normal temperatures. This combination will increase stress to developing and early reproductive corn. Scattered thundershowers and slightly cooler conditions are forecast for next week. Corn will need better rainfall and less heat to avoid a decline in yield potential during the next few weeks.
