Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Stressful and possibly damaging cold over the central United States and variable conditions in the South America outlook are the primary weather features for the commodity market's attention Friday.

HARSH MIDWEST COLD WAVE

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for very cold conditions along with snow through the weekend in the Midwest. Temperatures reaching below zero Fahrenheit will be widespread in western and northern areas. Record cold is possible with this pattern. Eastern areas have near zero Fahrenheit values, possibly reaching into soft red winter wheat areas with winterkill potential. A couple of systems next week could produce moderate snow for the eastern half of the region.

COLD AND SNOW FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains wheat areas have a very cold weekend in store. Temperatures are expected to plunge to below zero Fahrenheit over much of the region. Record cold is possible with this pattern. The forecast offers moderate to heavy snow during the coming weekend which would be very important for protective cover.

BITTER NORTHERN PLAINS COLD

The Northern Plains will have very cold Arctic air in place through the weekend and much of the seven-day period. This pattern will be stressful to livestock and will hinder transportation. Record cold is possible with this pattern. The cold remains in place through the 10- to 14-day time frame.

RAIN FOR CENTRAL BRAZIL

Central Brazil has heavy rain in the forecast through the weekend and next week. This wetter trend is unfavorable for soybean harvest and safrinha corn planting. Southern Brazil has a lighter rainfall pattern in the outlook. Temperatures have a near- to above-normal trend, suggesting very little heat stress.

SCATTERED WEEKEND ARGENTINA SHOWERS

In central Argentina, scattered showers continue in the weekend forecast. Central areas that are bypassed will see dryness concern develop for filling corn and soybeans. This area has seen heavy rainfall mixed with prolonged dry stretches over the last month, leading to mixed crop conditions. A frontal boundary this weekend will put another end to showers for next week, continuing the stress on dry areas.
