Build Resilience for a Better Business

Psychologists say resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma or stress.

2020 is a test on everyone's resilience, with its fires, hurricanes, droughts, derechos, a global pandemic, civil unrest, trade wars and hordes of locusts, just to name the big ones. With plenty of adversity to go around, especially after a long slog of barely breaking even, farmers are pretty resilient already; but do you bounce back from setbacks as quickly you'd like? Would you rather be a step ahead?

"Resilience isn't necessarily a personality trait that only some people possess," according to an article from the American Psychological Association. "On the contrary, resilience involves behaviors, thoughts and actions that anyone can learn and develop.

"There are many aspects of your life you can control, modify and grow with," the article continues. "Becoming more resilient not only helps you get through difficult circumstances, it also empowers you to grow and even improve your life along the way."

Psychologists agree strong connections and relationships help build resilience, as does fostering wellness, be it personal or business. Being proactive and moving toward your goals add up, as does embracing healthy thoughts by keeping things in perspective, accepting change, learning from the past and remaining hopeful.

It's precisely because 2020 has been so trying that we decided to make "Farm Strong: Strategies to Build Resilience" the theme of this year's DTN Ag Summit. We'll dive into the importance of building trust and the power of positive leadership, in addition to the outstanding weather, market and global perspectives you're accustomed to at the Summit. The event is completely virtual this year, and we hope you'll take the time to grow with us.
