Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- Periods of rain throughout the next seven days in the Midwest, and mixed rain prospects in South America, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

WET MIDWEST PATTERN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a rainy and wet week in the Midwest. The weekend features widespread moderate-to-heavy rain. Another system will move through in the middle of next week with moderate precipitation, most likely over southern areas. A third system may bring moderate showers to western areas in the latter half of next week. The rain will add to saturated soil conditions and lead to flood threats along with delaying spring fieldwork.

SCATTERED SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN

In the Southern Plains, two storm systems with scattered rainfall are indicated during the coming seven-day period. Drier sections in the southwest may pick up some needed moisture with both systems. Winter wheat coming out of dormancy would benefit from any showers in this area.

VARIABLE NORTHERN PLAINS PRECIPITATION

Northern Plains areas have variable precipitation in the forecast through the next week. Southeastern sectors have moderate-to-heavy amounts in store, which will lead to delayed fieldwork and a threat of flooding. Elsewhere, amounts will be lighter. Mild conditions will continue melting the snow cover in the region.

DELTA SEVERE STORM THREAT

The Delta has a stormy forecast. Showers and thunderstorms are in store through the weekend. Severe storms with hail and tornado potential are likely. Rainfall will be moderate. Another storm system with moderate rain moves through the region during next week. Saturated soils and delayed fieldwork will continue.

LIGHT SOUTHERN BRAZIL RAIN

Southern Brazil crop areas will see some rainfall over the weekend, but many areas will stay dry, stressing filling corn and soybeans. Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil is projected to have its lowest soybean crop size in four years. Showers return to central and continue for northern areas into next week, benefitting newly planted corn and cotton.

SHOWERS FOR ARGENTINA

Most crop areas of Argentina have seen scattered showers, offering beneficial crop moisture. Periods of showers continue through next week.

Some areas may be missed from the scattered activity, but overall prospects look good for late-filling corn and soybeans.

COOL TO COLD IN EUROPE

Western and southern Europe wheat areas continue with a colder forecast during the first part of next week. This colder trend may cause some shock to winter wheat, which is several weeks ahead of normal in its post-dormancy development.

COOL BLACK SEA FORECAST

In the Black Sea region, winter wheat in Russia and Ukraine is in the tillering to jointing stage, about two to three weeks earlier than normal. Very cool conditions are forecast for early next week, which will bear watching for possible cold stress to the crop. Low temperatures are forecast in the range of minus 5 to minus 7 Celsius (23 to 19 degrees Fahrenheit).
