April 2025 failed to bring good news to the machinery market. Tractor sales of all horsepower ranges were down 12.3% last month compared to April 2024. Combine sales were down 31.9% in April 2025 compared to April 2024.

The preliminary monthly numbers for April were released May 12 by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). The statistics are derived from AEM surveys.

Sales in every category of tractor reported by AEM were also down in April, as they have been for many months. Sales of less-than-40-horsepower tractors were down 10.4% in April compared to a year earlier. It was the same story for 40- to 100-horsepower tractors: Sales, year over year in April, were down 7.3%.

Sales of tractors more common to commercial farm work were down, as well. Sales of two-wheel-drive tractors, 100 horsepower and above, were down a hefty 28.5% in April compared to April 2024. Sales of four-wheel-drive tractors were down sharply, 41.5%, from April 2024 to April 2025.

AEM also reports year-to-date numbers. Sales of all tractors are down 13.3% during January through April 2025 compared to January through April 2024.

Combine sales are off 48.3% for this year, January-April 2025 compared to January-April 2024.
