BRP has expanded its line of Can-Am side-by-sides with the four-seat 2014 Commander MAX 1000 DPS (Dynamic Power Steering) and 1000 XT (an up-featured model). The two models are based on the Can-Am Commander 800R and 1000 two-seat side-by-sides.

The Commander platform features a 29.5-inch longer wheelbase than the two-seater. It is 58.6 inches wide and has a wheelbase of 105.3 inches (overall length is 147.8 inches).

Rear passengers ride the Commander in "stadium seats." That is, rear-seat passengers sit in seats set 3.5 inches higher than the front seats for better visibility. The rear seats are designed the same as the front, with a full backrest, lumbar and shoulder support and side bolsters for lateral support. Each passenger has his own grab bar and handhold

The Commander is powered by an 85-hp (976 cc) Rotax 1000 V-Twin, fuel-injected and liquid-cooled engine. Drivability is enhanced with an electronically controlled power steering package that gives the driver three levels of assist depending upon the speed of the vehicle. The steering package includes a tilt feature.

An electronic "throttle-by-wire" system works to smooth acceleration even when the driver's foot is bouncing on the accelerator pedal while driving over rough terrain.

The Commanders front and rear suspension packages have 10 inches of travel and 11 inches of ground clearance. The braking system features ventilated disc brakes -- dual disc on the front, single disc on the rear. The vehicle rolls on lightweight, Maxxis Bighhorns, 27 x 9 x 14-inch radial tires.

The side-by-side features an industry-exclusive dual-level cargo box with tilt assist. It is cargo space separated by a removable, water resistant panel. The box offers upper and lower storage with independent tailgates. The box carries 600 pounds, total (400 pounds in the upper box and 200 in the lower box). The cockpit has plenty of storage -- 4.5 gallons in the glove box, 3.5 gallons of space under the seat and a third-of-a-gallon in a space located in the center console.

The Commander tows 1,500 pounds with a 2-inch receiver and carries 10 gallons of fuel.

The XT package includes a WARN winch, front bumper and mud guards, among other features. Colors include Pure Magnesium Metallic and NEXT G-1 Vista camouflage.

Prices start at $16,199 ($17,799 for the XT model).
