The U.S. Grains Council has been working to provide nutritional education on the use of dried distillers with solubles to cattlemen and distributors in the southeast region of Mexico, according to an article by the Council (http://bit.ly/…).

Consultants with the Council recently gave a presentation in Campeche, an area near Yucatan that has an estimated 500,000 head of cattle. USGC Consultant Monica Perez presented the results of a recent feed trial funded by the USGC and gave attendees information about how to incorporate DDGS into feed rations.

After the meeting, the Council also reached out to local feed mills and companies with information about the nutritional benefits of selling DDGS to their customers, to give them more buying options, which sparked interest in distributing DDGS in feed supplements. One challenge is that the Council found that many small ranchers lack feed mixing equipment, making it important for distributors to sell DDGS in supplements to give more producers access.

The Council will work with one company, which signed a memorandum of understanding, to distribute DDGS in the states of Morelos, Puebla, Oaxaca, Tlaxcala and Veracruz. Council staff hopes to enlist more local distributors to sign MOUs to expand the region's use of DDGS.

In 2014, Mexico important more than 1.5 million metric tons of U.S. DDGS in 2014, although with greater understanding of how to use it, the market potential could be even larger.
