House Agriculture Committee Chairman Michael Conaway, R-Texas, will take the helm of the House-led probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, after embattled House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., agreed to step aside, The Dallas Morning News and other news organizations reported.

Conaway’s new role immediately led to questions about whether he would have time to work on the 2018 farm bill, but a House Agriculture Committee spokesperson said, “Chairman Conaway’s responsibilities at the Intelligence Committee will not impact the House Agriculture Committee’s activities or the chairman’s anticipated timeline for writing and passing a new farm bill,” Politico reported.

The Dallas Morning News cited that Conaway also emphasized that his role is temporary, and he expects Nunes to be exonerated and to return.

"It is responsibility I take with the utmost seriousness. My profession as a CPA and auditor has taught me to be objective and methodical, and that is how I intend to help lead this investigation," Conaway said in a written statement expressing confidence that he can conduct an "effective, bipartisan investigation" with the panel's top Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California - an outspoken critic of Nunes in recent weeks.
