US Byproduct Exports Make Annual Gains in May

OMAHA (DTN) -- The U.S. Census Bureau said Wednesday that U.S. exports of goods and services totaled $210.6 billion in May, up $4.2 billion from April. Imports totaled $266.2 billion, up $8.5 billion on the month. The resulting trade deficit of $55.5 billion for May was up from $51.2 billion in April. USDA followed the Census Bureau report with more details for exports of ethanol, biodiesel and distillers grains.

USDA said U.S. exports of ethanol totaled 99.6 million gallons in May, down from 150.2 million in April, but up 9% from a year ago. Canada was the top destination in May, accounting for 23% of total exports and followed by India and Brazil. So far in 2019, U.S. ethanol exports are down 19% from a year ago.

U.S. exports of biodiesel totaled 59,117 metric tons (mt) in May, up from 52,203 mt in April, and up 6% from a year ago. Canada was the top destination in May, accounting for 96% of all U.S. exports and followed by Netherlands in a distant second. In the first five months of 2019, biodiesel exports are up 13% from a year ago.

U.S. exports of distillers grains totaled 1,002,031 mt in May, up from 917,836 mt in April and up 3% from a year ago. Mexico was the top destination in May, taking 23% U.S. exports and followed by Turkey, South Korea, Vietnam and many others. In the first five months of 2019, U.S. exports of distillers grains are down 5% from a year ago.
