Single-Ingredient Herbicide Option Added

DECATUR, Ill. (DTN) -- Farmers interested in growing crops containing 2,4-D tolerance will have an additional herbicide option in 2018. Dow AgroSciences has announced it has received registration for a single-ingredient herbicide called Enlist One.

The new 2,4-D choline herbicide joins the previously registered Enlist Duo, a blend of 2,4-D choline and glyphosate. Both herbicides feature a drift-reduction component called Colex-D technology. The two herbicides are the only 2,4-D herbicides approved for use with the Enlist trait.

The new straight-goods herbicide recognizes that farmers using the Enlist trait might want to customize their weed-control program. In particular, it allows the addition of glufosinate as a potential tank-mix partner. Enlist cotton and soybeans have a stacked tolerance to 2,4-D, glyphosate and glufosinate. Enlist corn contains a stack of 2,4-D, glyphosate and aryloxyphenoxypropionate (FOP) tolerance.

Dow launched the Enlist cotton trait in 2016 in PhytoGen (W3FE) cotton varieties, and the company estimates approximately 500,000 acres containing the trait were planted in 2017. The Enlist corn trait received final import approvals this summer and will be available in SmartStax Enlist and PowerCore Enlist hybrids in 2018.

Enlist soybeans are still in a holding pattern, waiting for final import approvals from China and the European Union. "We continue to be optimistic about import approvals yet this year," says John Chase, Dow AgroSciences, Enlist commercial leader. Dow has stated they will not launch the technology without those critical market approvals.

The company is planning to increase the number of W3FE cotton varieties in its portfolio for 2018. Jonathan Siebert, Enlist field sales leader, told DTN in August that the company received about one call per week regarding potential 2,4-D injury during the heavy summer spray season.

"Cotton is extremely sensitive to 2,4-D," said Siebert. "There was a small amount of off-target movement to address. We saw some tank contamination issues. We've been working with growers on those issues.

"However, we feel as though we've launched this technology in the toughest geography there is since cotton is so sensitive. That's given us good practices to follow as we move into corn and soybeans," Siebert said.

Corn and soybean are not nearly as sensitive to 2,4-D as cotton. However, vegetables and many other surrounding crops are on the landscape, noted Chase. "We are not taking our foot off the gas from a training standpoint," he said.

While Enlist One offers a different base for new herbicide combinations, applicators will still need to be sure to check the list of approved tank-mix partners at www.EnlistTankMix.com. Enlist One has received federal registration for use in 34 states.
