OMAHA (DTN) -- Variable precipitation this week in the Midwest, and continued scattered rain in the primary Brazil crop areas, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

MIXED MIDWEST RAIN PROSPECT

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for drier conditions this week to allow some harvest progress. Showers will concentrate in eastern areas. The six-to-10-day time frame brings moderate rainfall to northern areas, and locally heavy to eastern areas. Freezing conditions during the past weekend may have damaged some crops, with the extent uncertain.

QUIETER NORTHERN PLAINS FORECAST

Northern Plains crop areas have extensive harvest disruption and crop damage following a large snowstorm during the past weekend, which left up to 2 feet (61 centimeters) of snow. Drier and milder conditions this week will allow some recovery and snowmelt. Rain chances redevelop during the coming weekend.

COLD IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains crop areas had strong winds and much lower temperatures during the past weekend. Germination and early development of recently planted winter wheat will slow with the lower temperatures with a hard freeze through west and central areas. The next 10 days offer variable temperature patterns.

DRY PRAIRIES PATTERN

The Canadian Prairies have a dry week ahead following a snowstorm and blizzard conditions in southeastern areas during the past weekend. Harvest progress remains slow due to recent stormy conditions across the region. There is a chance for a new storm system to form in the next seven-to-10 days, which will be closely tracked.

VARIABLE BRAZIL RAIN

Across Brazil, west-central crop areas were dry with only a few light showers during the weekend. Hot weather redeveloped through key growing areas for soybeans in Mato Grosso to Rio Grande do Sul during Saturday and Sunday as well. High temperatures reached over 100 Fahrenheit both days. Northern growing areas may see a few thundershowers through Tuesday, but then will be dry during middle to late week. Planting progress may slow in areas that remain drier and hotter this week. Southern areas will see scattered showers and thundershowers this week along with lower temperatures.

CENTRAL ARGENTINA RAIN

Argentina crop areas saw locally heavy rainfall in northern Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Entre Rios during the weekend. Soil moisture is adequate to surplus for corn planting. Scattered thunderstorms also developed in Cordoba during Sunday and Sunday night. Rainfall was beneficial for planting moisture in areas of the heavier showers in Cordoba.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA SHOWERS

Western Australia wheat areas had light rains during the past weekend. Eastern areas were dry. Wheat production remains on track to be short of last year's total because of drought.
