Hot and Dry Weekend in Argentina

OMAHA (DTN) -- Minimal rain chances in central Argentina, and continued heavy rain for central Brazil, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

SPARSE RAIN FOR ARGENTINA

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for central Argentina to receive only sparse precipitation, along with staying hot. High temperatures and only a few light showers through next Wednesday will greatly increase stress on reproductive and filling corn and soybeans. It now appears likely that yield potential for both crops will be declining until rain chances increase or temperatures decrease. Longer-range charts suggest a chance for showers and cooler weather at the end of next week but this is uncertain.

HEAVY RAIN FOR CENTRAL BRAZIL

Central Brazil continues with heavy rain in store through the next seven days. The persistent moisture will favor filling soybeans, but will be unfavorable to maturing soybeans and the harvest. Harvest progress in Mato Grosso is currently running behind last year's pace. Southern Brazil is drier, but has favorable soil moisture supplies at this time.

DRYNESS TO CONTINUE IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

Dry conditions are expected to remain in place over the Southern Plains. There is no significant precipitation in sight, although some locations may see a little snow or snow showers at times in the next week.

NORTHERN PLAINS COLD WAVE

A very cold and dry pattern will cover the Northern Plains and western Midwest over the next week. Overnight low temperatures reaching 8 to 18 degrees below zero Fahrenheit are expected over North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Lows fall below zero F as far south as northern Iowa.

VARIABLE SOUTH AFRICA RAIN

South Africa corn areas have beneficial rain and favorable temperatures in store through the next seven days. However, western areas could use more rain. While not in a commodity crop area, a water supply crisis is looming in Cape Town in the far western side of the nation.
