OMAHA (DTN) -- Showers crossing the western Midwest, and a cool but still dry pattern for northern crop areas, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

SHOWERS CROSS WESTERN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for improved crop conditions in the western Midwest with some beneficial rainfall and more moderate temperatures. However, some significant dry areas still exist in Iowa as crop ratings continue to fall. Unfavorably wet weather will return to Indiana and Ohio.

BENEFICIAL SOUTHERN PLAINS PATTERN

Southern Plains crop areas have generally favorable conditions for developing crops with some beneficial rainfall. Moderate to heavy totals are suggested in the forecast over the next week.

LIGHT NORTHERN PLAINS RAIN

Across the Northern Plains, episodes of above- to much-above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall stresses pollinating and filling corn and filling soybeans. Crop losses are expected. Significant losses to spring wheat have already occurred. Temperatures will not be as hot during the next seven days. However, rainfall will continue to be near to below normal.

ONGOING PRAIRIES DRYNESS

In the Canadian Prairies, episodes of above- to much-above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall have been very stressful to heading and filling spring wheat and developing canola. Significant crop losses are expected.

MIXED RUSSIA AND UKRAINE RAINFALL

Across the Black Sea region, generally favorable rainfall has been noted for crops in Ukraine and Russia; however, more rain would be useful in southeastern and north-central Ukraine along with southwestern portions of the Russia southern district.

NORTHEAST CHINA SHOWERS

Northeast China has seen some beneficial rain this week for reproductive to filling corn and soybeans. However, more would benefit in some areas, especially in the key soybean province of Heilongjiang.

DRIER TREND IN WESTERN INDIA

Western India crop areas are drier this week. This is helpful due to recent heavy rain and flood issues. Cotton and groundnuts sustained some damage from the downpours.

MODEST AUSTRALIA RAIN

The past week brought some beneficial rain for wheat in Australia; however, more is needed as rainfall totals remain well below normal since May 1.
