Intense Northern Plains Heat

OMAHA (DTN) -- Intense heat in the Northern Plains through the weekend, and mixed prospects for the Midwest, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

VARIABLE MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for variable conditions in the Midwest. Scattered showers followed by more seasonal temperatures during the next few days will favor developing to reproductive crops, except in parts of the east where heavy rains early this week will maintain unfavorable conditions in some locations. A drier and hotter trend during the five- to 10-day period will increase stress to reproductive crops in some west and south areas. More moderate temperatures and continued shower activity may favor crops in areas from north and east Iowa and Minnesota eastward.

MILDER WEEKEND FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, irrigated crops will benefit with temperatures turning cooler following a few scattered showers during the next few days. Drier and hotter conditions after that will return with stress potential to crops.

MORE NORTHERN PLAINS HEAT AND DROUGHT

Extreme drought continues in the Northern Plains. Temperatures will be very hot as well through the weekend. Spring wheat is in its worst condition in almost 30 years. Losses to row-crop production are also likely with the extensive dry and hot pattern.

CONTINUED DROUGHTS IN SOUTHERN PRAIRIES

In the Canadian Prairies, no significant rainfall is in store for the driest areas of the Canadian Prairies during the next seven days. Episodes of hot temperatures also increase stress on canola and wheat at times while intervals of cooler temperatures are also expected.

BRIEF UKRAINE SHOWER EPISODE

Moderate to locally heavy showers and thundershowers have occurred through Belarus, west and central Ukraine during this week. This includes previously dry areas of central Ukraine and will be considered highly beneficial for summer crops planted in the area. However, the forecast suggests that it will be awhile before another good rain event develops. Temperatures vary somewhat.

MORE NORTHEAST CHINA SHOWERS

In northeastern China, showers through the weekend will benefit most corn areas. Another period of favorable showers for corn areas is expected next week, preceded by hot temperatures and followed by somewhat cooler conditions. It is somewhat more uncertain as to how much rain would fall in the major soybean growing areas of Heilongjiang province during the next week.

RAIN FOR WEST INDIA

Western India crop areas have a high prospect for significant rain through the weekend. Showers would be beneficial for soybeans, cotton and groundnuts. Some flooding is also possible in Gujarat.

DRY AUSTRALIA FORECAST

Australia's primary wheat areas have no meaningful rain in the weekend forecast. Dry conditions are threatening to cause a notable reduction in wheat production this year.
