Notable Dryness Issues

OMAHA (DTN) -- Dryness in several primary U.S. and Canadian Prairies crop areas, and limited rainfall in north-central Ukraine, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

VARIABLE MIDWEST RAIN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for Midwest rain to focus over southeastern areas over the next week. This wet pattern may be stressful to crops which already have seen issues with heavy rain this season. Meanwhile, dry and hot conditions are indicated for the western and northern Midwest, which may lead to crop stress for corn and soybeans.

HOT AND DRY IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, there are no significant concerns for mature wheat and wheat harvest, although thunderstorms may at times cause delays. A trend toward below normal rainfall and above normal temperatures may increase the risk to summer crops in the area.

MORE NORTHERN PLAINS DROUGHT

Rain chances during the next week in the Northern Plains are limited. The lack of precipitation, along with hot to very hot weather, will greatly increase stress to crops. Some wheat acreage is being baled for livestock forage rather than left for grain because of the adverse impact of drought on crops and pastures.

CENTRAL PRAIRIES DRYNESS

In the Canadian Prairies, drought concerns are increasing in an area centered on southwest and central Saskatchewan. Recent cooler weather has helped ease concerns somewhat; however, the forecast now features a hotter trend in weather over the next week. Heat and dryness are likely to be very stressful to crops in this portion of the region. Areas farther north and east within the Prairies should not be as hot or as dry.

UKRAINE DRYNESS WATCH

Dryness is a lingering concern for crops in north-central Ukraine. Temperatures have varied but have recently turned higher. Showers have occurred in the area during the weekend with some easing of crop stress. High temperatures have also occurred in south and east Ukraine and south Russia during the weekend, but these locations have better soil moisture to withstand this heat. The forecast shows a return to more seasonal temperatures and rainfall during the next week.

SHOWERS FOR NORTHEAST CHINA

In northeastern China, showers and cooler weather this week will help ease crop stress for corn and soybeans. However, additional milder conditions are needed to end concerns.

FAVORABLE INDIA SHOWERS

India monsoon rainfall continues to improve across central and northern areas. Significant rainfall has or will occur through key growing areas for oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane and other crops. This will likely include beneficial rainfall in the soybean belt of west-central India.
