OMAHA (DTN) -- Moderate to locally heavy rains for the Midwest and eastern-central plains for the next few days, drier and hotter conditions for the Northern Plains, and a cooler trend for the Southern Plains this week are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

MIDWEST RAINS, THUNDERSTORMS

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for rain and scattered thunderstorms for the Midwest during this week and early next week, maintaining mostly favorable conditions for developing corn and soybeans in western areas, while in the east, warmer, drier weather is needed. There could be locally heavy rain the next few days in the Midwest. For the western Midwest, moderate to locally heavy showers and thundershowers favor eastern and southern locations Wednesday into Wednesday night; heavy showers and thunderstorms favor central and southern areas Thursday. Light to locally moderate showers are expected for northern and eastern areas mostly early Friday. For the eastern Midwest, scattered afternoon or evening thundershowers are forecast mostly in northwest and north areas Wednesday or Wednesday night, and west-central and north areas during Thursday or Thursday night. Scattered light to locally moderate showers are expected Friday.

DRIER, HOTTER FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

More rain would benefit developing corn, soybeans and spring wheat in the Northern Plains. However, the lack of any hot weather limits stress. Drier, hotter weather is expected in the region and will last for an extended period next week.

COOLER FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Southern Plains has no significant concerns for mature wheat and the wheat harvest at this time, although showers may at times slow the harvest. A cooler period will favor developing corn and sorghum in the region during this week. Hot weather is expected next week.

MAINLY DRY FOR WEST TEXAS

West Texas will see mainly dry conditions or only a few light showers during the next seven to 10 days. Temperatures will be above to well above normal. Dryland fields could use more rain to support favorable development.

ADEQUATE TO SURPLUS DELTA MOISTURE

There was rain late last week in the Delta due to post-tropical depression Cindy. This will maintain adequate to surplus moisture for crops and is favorable, except for areas of local flooding.

MAINLY FAVORABLE OUTLOOK FOR CANADA'S PRAIRIES

Showers during the week and more seasonal temperatures will favor crops in the Canadian Prairies, except in the northwest where fieldwork delays are still of some concern.

BELOW AVERAGE RAINS FOR NORTHEAST CHINA

More rain is needed in northeast China for favorable development of corn and soybeans, especially in the western crop areas. Drier, hotter weather is expected early this week, while late in the week, we may see some increase in scattered showers and less hot weather. Rainfall looks to be average to below normal during the next 10 days.

IMPROVED INDIAN MONSOON RAINS THIS WEEK

Monsoon rainfall continues to improve across central and northwest India at this time. Significant rainfall has or will occur through key growing areas for oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane and other crops. This will likely include beneficial rainfall in the soybean belt of west-central India.
