Report Neutral for Corn, Soybeans; Bearish Wheat

OMAHA (DTN) -- As of Oct. 23, more than half the U.S. corn crop was harvested and just over three-quarters of the soybeans had been cut, according to USDA's latest Crop Progress report released Monday.

The nation's corn crop is 61% harvested, compared to 46% last week, 70% last year and a 62% average. "Monday's report is neutral for corn," said DTN Analyst Todd Hultman.

Seventy-six percent of the soybeans are harvested, compared to 62% last week, 84% last year and a 76% average. "Monday's report is neutral for soybeans," Hultman said.

Winter wheat planting is 79% complete, compared to 72% last week, 81% last year and an 82% average. Winter wheat is 60% emerged, compared to 47% last week, 58% last year and a 58% average.

Winter wheat condition was rated for the first time this fall at 59% good to excellent, which compares to 47% last year.

"These initial ratings resulted in DTN Winter Wheat Condition Index of 155, up from 126 a year ago and up from the five-year average of 134," Hultman said. "Monday's report is bearish for winter wheat."

Ninety-three percent of cotton had bolls opening, compared to 89% last week, 95% last year and a 92% average. Cotton harvested was reported at 39% compared to 30% last week, 39% last year and a 37% average. Cotton condition worsened slightly to 48% good to excellent, compared to 47% last week.

Ninety-seven percent of the rice crop was harvested, compared to 93% last week, 97% last year and a 92% average.

Sorghum harvest was 67% complete, compared to 57% last week, 68% last year and a 58% average.

Colorado:

The state remained warm and dry this past week and drought stress is becoming a concern in some areas. Overall, farmers had 6.9 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 12% very short, 36% short, 50% adequate and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 12% very short, 35% short, 52% adequate and 1% surplus. The state's corn crop was 53% harvested, well above 29% last year and above 45% on average. Corn was rated 76% in good to excellent condition. Winter wheat was 86% emerged, up from 76% last year and 79% on average. Wheat was rated 59% in good to excellent conditions.

Illinois:

Statewide, temperatures averaged 7.3 degrees above normal this past week, with rainfall amounts coming in near normal. Overall, farmers had 5.3 days suitable for field work and harvest neared completion across the state. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 7% short, 76% adequate and 16% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 5% short, 85% adequate, and 9% surplus. The state's corn crop was 83% harvested, down from 91% last year but above the five-year average of 75%. Soybeans were 76% harvested, well below 91% last year, but near 77% on average. Winter wheat was 68% planted and 38% emerged, compared to 78% planted and 49% emerged last year and 67% planted and 34% emerged on average. Wheat was rated 68% in good to excellent condition.

Indiana:

Rain showers halted some harvest efforts this past week and left farmers with just 4.4 days suitable for field work on average. The wet weather has been good for winter wheat seed germination, however. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 8% short, 75% adequate and 16% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 10% short, 79% adequate and 10% surplus. The state's corn crop was 64% harvested, down from 77% last year and above 56% on average. Corn moisture content was rated 18% on average, just below 19% on average. Soybeans were 71% harvested, down from 88% last year and 68% on average. Soybean moisture content was rated 13% on average, same as the five-year average. Winter wheat was 71% planted and 42% emerged, compared to 71% planted and 37% emerged on average. Winter wheat was rated 74% in good to excellent condition.

Iowa:

Much of the state recorded no measurable rainfall this past week. Statewide, temperatures were unseasonably warm and averaged 5.9 degrees above average. Overall, farmers had 6.1 days suitable for field work, which were devoted to harvesting crops, chopping and baling corn stalks, tillage and manure applications. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 6% short, 84% adequate and 9% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 4% short, 82% adequate and 13% surplus. The state's corn crop was 52% harvested, down from 67% last year and 61% on average. Corn was rated 83% in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were 77% harvested, down from 89% last year and 86% on average. Grain movement from farm to elevator was rated 37% moderate and 26% heavy. ON-farm grain storage availability was rated 26% short, 70% adequate and 4% surplus. Off-farm grain storage availability was rated 20% short, 75% adequate, and 5% surplus.

Kansas:

The state experienced above normal temperatures and lower than average rainfall this past week, giving farmers 6.7 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 6% very short, 21% short, 68% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moistures supplies were rated 4% very short, 16% short, 75% adequate and 5% surplus. The state's corn crop was 87% harvested, just below 89% last year and above 83% on average. Soybeans were 53% harvested, down from 65% last year and 62% on average. Soybeans were rated 72% in good to excellent condition. Winter wheat was 84% planted, near 88% last year, and behind the five-year average of 89%. Sixty-three percent of the crop has emerged, near 62% last year and 66% on average. Wheat was rated 61% in good to excellent condition.

Michigan:

Fieldwork was delayed at the beginning of the week, due to a wet previous week and mid-week showers slowed harvest progress further. Farmers had an average of 4.9 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were 3% short, 67% adequate and 30% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 5% short, 74% adequate and 20% surplus. The state's corn crop was 27% harvested, down from 42% last year and 31% on average. Corn was rated 65% in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were 51% harvested, down from 77% last year and 63% on average. Soybeans were rated 72% in good to excellent condition. Winter wheat was 73% planted and 52% emerged, compared to 81% planted and 53% emerged on average. Winter wheat was rated 78% in good to excellent condition.

Minnesota:

Drier weather allowed harvest to progress, but some areas still remain too wet for equipment and harvest. Overall, farmers had 5.8 days suitable for field work, which was primarily devoted to harvesting, fall fertilizer applications and tillage. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% short, 78% adequate and 20% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% short, 78% adequate and 20% surplus. The state's corn crop was 55% harvested, down from 74% last year and 62% on average. Corn was rated 87% in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were 95% harvested, just below 98% last year and the same as last year.

Missouri:

Another drier than average week wrapped up, allowing harvest to advance. Temperatures averaged 7.4 degrees above normal and rainfall amounts averaged .19 inches below normal. Overall, farmers had 6.1 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 5% very short, 14% short, 77% adequate and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 3% very short, 12% short, 83% adequate and 2% surplus. The state's corn crop was 87% harvested, down from 93% last year but above 83% on average. Soybeans were 57% harvested, below 62% last year but above 53% on average. Soybeans were rated 74% in good to excellent condition. Winter wheat was 48% planted and 27% emerged, compared to 50% planted and 27% emerged on average.

Nebraska:

Temperatures averaged four to six degrees above normal this past week, with limited rainfall, which improved harvest conditions. Overall, farmers had 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 9% very short, 26% short, 62% adequate and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 8% very short, 25% short, 65% adequate and 2% surplus. The state's corn crop was 50% harvested, near 52% last year and 54% on average. The corn crop was rated 73% in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were 78% harvested, down from 87% last year and 88% on average. Winter wheat was 93% emerged, up from 89% last year and 84% on average. Wheat was rated 66% in good to excellent condition.

North Dakota

Ideal harvest weather visited the state this past week, with only the south-central portions of the state seeing rainfall. Overall, farmers had 5.9 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% very short, 11% short, 75% adequate and 12% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 3% very short, 12% short, 72% adequate and 13% surplus. The state's corn crop was 39% harvested, down from 56% last year and 51% on average. Corn was rated 81% in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were 94% harvested, near 97% last year and 88% on average. Winter wheat was 94% planted, down from 99% last year. Eighty-seven percent was emerged, near 85% last year.

Ohio

Small grains and corn and soybean harvest proceeded well until mid-week precipitation slowed progress. Statewide, farmers had an average of 4.1 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 3% very short, 14% short, 67% adequate and 16% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 7% very short, 17% short, 70% adequate and 6% surplus. The state's corn crop was 49% harvested, well below 70% last year but near 41% on average. Corn was rated 47% in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were 79% harvested, down from 91% last year but ahead 64% on average. Winter wheat was 85% planted and 45% emerged, compared to 73% planted and 39% emerged on average. Wheat was rated 82% in good to excellent condition.

Oklahoma:

The state experienced warmer than average temperatures this past week and drought conditions worsened slightly. Farmers had 6.6 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 9% very short, 32% short, 57% adequate and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 5% very short, 28% short, 66% adequate and 1% surplus. Corn was 82% harvested, near 86% last year and 89% on average. Soybeans were 31% harvested, near 32% last year and the same as average. Wheat was 83% planted and 64% emerged, compared to 86% planted and 62% emerged on average. Wheat was rated 53% in good to excellent condition. Cotton was 29% harvested, above the average pace of 16%. Cotton was 51% in good to excellent condition.

South Dakota:

Generally favorable weather was interrupted by some showers mid-week, which allowed harvest to continue lagging behind average this past week. Farmers had six days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 10% very short, 25% short, 63% adequate and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 8% very short, 31% short, 60% adequate and 1% surplus. The state's corn crop was 47% harvested, down from 54% last year and 57% on average. Corn was rated 56% in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were 89% harvested, down from 94% last year and 93% on average. Winter wheat was 82% emerged, near 85% last year and ahead of 64% on average.

Texas:

Most of the state saw little to no rainfall this past week, with the exception of the Southern Low Plains, the Cross Timbers and East Texas. Growers had 6.6 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 12% very short, 33% short, 51% adequate and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 9% very short, 33% short, 53% adequate and 5% surplus. The state's corn crop was 85% harvested, up from 76% last year and the same as average. Corn was rated 55% in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were 78% harvested, near 79% last year and 80% on average. Soybeans were rated 42% in good to excellent condition. Winter wheat was 67% planted and 42% emerged, compared to 70% planted and 45% emerged on average. Wheat was rated 37% in good to excellent condition. Cotton was 28% harvested, just below 34% last year and 31% on average. Sorghum was 78% harvested, the same as last year and near 75% on average.

Wisconsin

Clear weather and warmer than average temperatures allowed harvest to proceed rapidly this past week. Growers had 5.7 days suitable for field work, which were spent planting winter wheat, tillage, and spreading manure. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% short, 78% adequate and 20% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% short, 78% adequate and 20% surplus. The state's corn crop was 38% harvested, near 41% last year and 39% on average. Corn was rated 86% in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were 71% harvested, down from 84% last year but near 75% on average. Winter wheat was 83% planted and 60% emerged, down from 91% planted and 66% emerged last year. Wheat was rated 85% in good to excellent condition.
