Dry and Heating Up Again in Argentina

Rains last week in the major corn and soybeans areas of central Argentina were disappointing and are expected to remain so during the next seven days. The main impact of the frontal passage late last week was cooler weather, which did ease crop stress.

However, temperatures are starting to heat back up again and are expected to remain hot through at least early next week. This is the main filling period for corn and soybeans, equivalent to the month of August in the Midwest. With not enough soil moisture available to properly fill corn and soybeans, further reductions in crop production are expected.

The weather situation in Brazil is generally favorable. Limited rainfall in central Brazil is allowing the soybean harvest to progress and adequate soil moisture favors second crop corn planting.

It is worth noting that the soybean harvest and second crop corn planting is significantly behind last year's levels, but is close to normal levels.

At this point, there is no sign of an end to the rainy season. The longer the rainy season goes on, the more favorable for double crop corn production. Weather conditions are favorable for filling and maturing corn and soybeans and any early harvesting in southern Brazil.
